The Trojans closed things out, it just wasn't pretty down the stretch.

The USC Trojans are now 2-0 in true road games, running past a tough Boston College squad that battled for 40 minutes on Sunday afternoon. Led by an outstanding personal performance from Elijah Stewart, scoring 22 points on 10-of-10 shooting from the field, the young Trojans slithered through a last-second rally to defeat the Eagles.

Boston College scored eight points in the span of 15 seconds, something that would make Reggie Miller be proud, but Katin Reinhardt nailed two free throws with 10.5 seconds left to secure the road win. In classic fashion, The Trojans made things close in the end, but this young unit found a way to grow up and grind out a nice non-conference win.

USC shot an impressive 54 percent from the field, including a 70-percent mark in the first half, overcoming a 17-turnover effort on the offensive end. Head coach Andy Enfield mixed things up starting Malik Marquetti over Reinhardt for the first time all season, but the UNLV transfer contributed 14 points off the bench.

After USC trailed by four at the half, 41-37, Nikola Jovanovic went off for 16 second-half points, on 8-of-10 shooting, and recorded a team-high nine rebounds. The Trojans won the battle on the boards, shot nearly 70 percent from the free throw line and hit over half their shots, a recipe for success that has allowed this team to play well away from home.

The athleticism in the front court really made life tough for the Eagles as they could not run step for step with Jovanovic running the floor and Jordan McLaughlin and Stewart pushing the pace on the fast break. What made the biggest difference, however, is that the Trojans were able to limit Boston College to just 29-percent shooting from behind the arc.

The Eagles' leading scorer, Olivier Hanlan, needed 20 shots to score 15 points. It was that type of shooting night as Boston College shot just over 40 percent from the field, but grabbed 12 offensive rebounds, in the losing effort.

Thanks to some great second half free throw shooting, the Trojans got ahead 72-63 in the final 30 seconds and did just enough to move their record to 7-4 on the season. USC now gets set for the final non-conference game of the season on December 30 at the Galen Center against Vermont, a possible NCAA Tournament team out of the America East.

The USC Trojans did a really nice job of getting out in transition for some easy points in a big 89-84 win over Utah State. Here's one of the Trojans' fast break buckets.

After Elijah Stewart did a nice job of doing the dirty work and diving on the floor when an Aggie seemed to have grabbed possession of a long rebound, Darion Clark ended up with the ball and pushed it up the court to Katin Reinhardt.

Reinhardt has a pretty easy path to the basket, but instead of taking the layup opportunity for himself, he instead drops a behind-the-back assist to the streaking Clark.

With the Trojans holding a one-point lead late in Sunday afternoon's game against the Utah State Aggies, Jordan McLaughlin came across halfcourt and saw a streaking Julian Jacobs headed to the rim.

McLaughlin threw a perfect lob pass to the left base of the backboard where Jacobs caught it and did the rest of the work.
Three Trojans tied or set career highs in points.

The USC Trojans missed six straight free throws down the stretch, but escaped with a victory over Utah State thanks to a season-high 89 points and career highs from Nikola Jovanovic, Jordan McLaughlin and Luis Gavrilovic.

In a battle of big men, Utah State redshirt freshman forward David Collette was the real standout Sunday afternoon at the Galen Center. Collette made all eight of his first half shots on his way to a career-high 32 points (12 of 16) and 14 rebounds. But Jovanovic dropped 23 points and got the last laugh, knocking down a big 3-pointer with 3:31 remaining to put the Trojans ahead for good.

Here are the highlights from the Trojans' victory over Utah State:

Here are the three big takeaways from USC's five-point non-conference win:

1. Offensive Onslaught

In the process of putting up their most first half points (40), highest point total of the season (89) and the second most points under Andy Enfield, the Trojans shot a season-best 50 percent (31 for 62) from the field. They also made a season-high 12 three-point buckets led by Jordan McLaughlin's five 3-pointers (though it took him 13 attempts).

"We usually can't score 89 points with no one guarding us, so I was a little shocked we made so many threes," USC head coach Andy Enfield joked. "But we've been playing much better offensively."

McLaughlin also contributed to USC's season-high 22 assists and its season-best 2.4-to-1 assist-to-turnover ratio. He set up five baskets and had his third game with only one turnover (USC is 3-0 in those games). Fellow starting guard Katin Reinhardt had a season-high six assists and only one turnover. He has only one turnover in the last two games after averaging 2.3 in the first seven games this year.

2. Big Buckets Off the Bench

Luis Gavrilovic is a guy that comes off the bench to provide a spark for USC. In the second half Sunday afternoon, he produced one hell of a jolt rather than just a measly spark. Gavrilovic made five of his six field goal attempts in the final 20 minutes.

"You see the confidence he's starting to develop. He's put a lot of time in the gym and I think that's where it comes from," Enfield said. "When he gets in the game, he only knows one way to play and that's as hard as he can."

With the score tied at 60, Andy Enfield had an offensively challenged lineup on the floor. Reserve point guard Chass Bryan was joined by Katin Reinhardt and Elijah Stewart in the backcourt along with Darion Clark and Gavrilovic down low. But the offense came in a big way from Gavrilovic.

He put the Trojans ahead driving from the left wing and banking in a jumper off the glass over a defender. On USC's next possession, he stepped out behind the line and knocked down his first 3-pointer of the year. Following a Utah State turnover, the Trojans used some very nice interior pass with Stewart driving toward the middle and finding Clark, who quickly fired the ball to a cutting Gavrilovic for a reverse layup for his seventh point in a row. The next time down the floor, it was Gavrilovic finding Clark under the basket. Clark was fouled and knocked down both free throws for a 9-0 run.

"Strahinja played a great game. He made a couple of mid-range jump shots. He made a three. He's really worked on his shot in the offseason," Enfield said. "I love coaching big guys that can shoot the ball."

3. Nikola The Great

USC is now 10-4 all time when Serbian sophomore Nikola Jovanovic scores in double figures. He was dynamic and dominant on the offensive end for the Trojans against Utah State. He tied his career high in points by scoring 17 in the second half.

After being 3 for 4 in the first half, Jovanovic went 6 for 7 and knocked down both of his three-point attempts in the second half. It was the first two 3-pointers Jovanovic has made this season. He was strong down low on the block and showed his versatility being able to step out and knock down the two big long distance shots, including the three that broke the game's ninth tie and put USC up for good.

It was a continuous for the big man, who seems to have found his groove after struggling early.

"It always happens that you just start slow in the season and then heating up and heating up," Nikola Jovanovic said. "Finally the shots fall in."

"I thought he underperformed most of the season," Andy Enfield said. "He’s really played well the last few games. You’re starting the see the player we thought he’d be and he wants to be."

***And the Foul!

4. J-Mac to JuJu Turning Into Special Combination

Following the under four minute media timeout, Utah State trimmed the lead back down to one point with two free throws. On USC's first possession, Jordan McLaughlin walked the ball up the court on the right side and saw Utah State in a zone defense. He barely made it two steps past halfcourt when he locked eyes with Julian Jacobs standing deep in the left corner.

Jacobs took off for the rim and McLaughlin followed his lead, lobbing a perfect alley-oop pass to the bottom corner of the backboard where Jacobs snatched the pass out of the air and slammed it home on top of David Collette, who came over too late. Jacobs hung on the rim with one hand behind his head while he loomed over Collette's back. The dunk gave the Trojans a three-point advantage that was pushed to an insurmountable six points with 47 seconds remaining.

Over the next few years, the combination of passing and athleticism from the Jordan and Julian, JJ alley-oops, are going to be quite special for Trojan fans.

The Trojans (5-3) try to build on their winning streak with a non-conference game against the Utah State Aggies (3-3) on Sunday at 2:00 p.m.

The USC Trojans are off to a 5-3 start after winning three straight games, including a big road victory over New Mexico at The Pit and following it up with a strong double-digit victory over the international-flavored LMU Lions. Freshman point guard Jordan McLaughlin put together his most complete game of his young career, scoring 18 points (6-for-10), dishing out seven assists, grabbing four rebounds and swiping three steals.

USC will try to build on the performance and try to push its winning streak to four games on Sunday afternoon when it faces Utah State -- the team that gave head coach Andy Enfield his first loss of his Trojan career. The Utah State Aggies enter the game at 3-3 after losing three straight to Mississippi State, UC Davis and BYU.

What to Watch:

They Call It a Winning Streak - After six games, the Trojans were 3-3 having bounced back and forth between wins and losses every game, starting with a loss to Portland State in the season opener. But USC has finally broke that streak with three straight wins. A win Sunday against Utah State would tie Andy Enfield's longest winning streak with USC.

Knocking Down Open Shots - USC had its best shooting performance from three-point range this season on Wednesday against Loyola Marymount. The Trojans knocked down nine of their 21 shots and ran away with the game. Outside shooting is a part of the game they have struggled with all season, entering the week shooting just 28.3 percent before the LMU performance bumped it up to 30.8 percent, moving them from No. 287 in the country to No. 262.

It all starts with Katin Reinhardt, who went 0-for-8 from the floor against New Mexico, but bounced back against LMU to score 11 points and knock down 3-of-5 three-point attempts. He's now shooting 35 percent from deep and only 29 percent from the field. He has been the Trojans' defensive stopper on the wing, but USC needs him to knock down his open shots as well.

The Aggies are No. 26 in the nation in defensive three-point field goal percentage. They have allowed opponents to make just 26 percent, so it'll be important for USC to knock down the open shots and drive the ball to the basket.

Returning to the Lineup - Malik Martin returned from a bone contusion in his knee after missing three games to play 11 minutes. He was rusty, evident by a pair of airballs and three turnovers, but he also had a dunk and a nice driving floater that he banked in from just outside the right block. While Nikola Jovanovic, Darion Clark and Luis Gavrilovic all stepped up in Martin's absence, it's important for him to provide some depth at the position, especially if a starter were to get into foul trouble.

Offensive Glass Monsters - Even though Malik Martin has been out for a couple weeks, the Trojans have continued to be strong on the offensive boards. USC is currently a top 40 team in both offensive rebounds and offensive rebounds per game. Nikola Jovanovic leads the way averaging more than three rebounds on the offensive glass per game while Darion Clark also is averaging 2.5 and Luis Gavrilovic has more than two per game as well.

Ball Control - Utah State is one of the best teams in the nation at taking care of the ball. The Aggies have turned the ball over only 47 times in six games. Compare that to USC's first three games when the Trojans turned it over 56 times! Since then, USC has been really good at taking care of the ball, turning it over just 57 times in five games for an 11.4 turnover average, which still isn't quite as good as the Aggies 9.4 per game.

Transfer Town - The Aggies feature seven players that have transferred to the small school in Logan, Utah. While many of those players are junior college transfers, but there is also Lew Evans, who is sitting out this season after transferring from Tulsa where he started 22 games for an NCAA Tournament team.

Flashback:

Last Matchup: Utah State won 78-65 on Nov. 8, 2013.

In Andy Enfield's USC debut, Utah State went on a 16-5 run to open the second half to push its lead to 18 points and never looked back. The Trojans shot 37 percent and were a horrid 4-for-24 from three-point land. J.T. Terrell scored 20 points on 8-for-17 shooting and Omar Oraby flashed a strong game with 15 points and nine rebounds, but unfortunately, it wasn't a precursor to a big season for either senior.
