Coach Dan Hubbs has powered up another fast start to the season

It's been one heck of a start to the 2015 USC Baseball campaign.

The Trojans are now 9-0 following a 3-2 extra-inning victory over Fresno State on Tuesday night, giving them back-to-back road wins to begin the season. Junior reliever Marc Huberman recorded his second save of the season, while sophomore slugger Jeremy Martinez fueled the come-from-behind effort with a bases-loaded RBI walk.

USC started 7-0 last season, but crashed back down to earth in record time losing six of their next seven games. The Trojans eventually finished 29-24 last season in what experts called one of the "last four teams out" of the tournament.

The 12-time National Champions have missed the postseason for an entire decade now, a shocking drought given USC's long standing success playing at Rod Dedeaux Field. It's been a long, arduous journey back to the top but USC has taken advantage of an easier part in the schedule with convincing victories over subpar opponents.

Led by a veteran laden roster with eight upperclassmen starting on a given night, the USC Trojans return an experienced corp to a roster that almost tasted postseason baseball last season. Brooks Kriske got the start last night for USC, pitching five innings of solid baseball striking out a career-high 10 batters.

The Trojans almost ended up kicking themselves in the foot after stranding 16 runners on base, but were able to strike with one run in the 10th to secure the win. That was highly in question, however, when Fresno State had the winning run at second base with one out in the 9th, before Jeff Paschke shut the door to force extra innings.

USC (9-0) returns home this weekend to face Fordham University in a three-game series beginning Friday night, running all the way through Saturday afternoon. Then USC will head up the 101 Freeway for a mid-week tilt with No. 21 UCSB before hosting ranked foes No. 1 Vanderbilt, No. 4 UCLA and No. 7 TCU in the Dodgertown Classic.

The Big Unit has earned his bid to Cooperstown. A three-year Trojan letter winner from 1983-85, Randy Johnson earned his berth into baseball's most prestigious community.

Johnson joins fellow Trojans in New York Mets pitcher Tom Seaver (1992) and Toronto Blue Jays front office executive Pat Gillick (2011) as members of the Hall of Fame. Johnson was elected to the Hall with 97.3 percent of the vote. Seaver (98.84) actually has the highest voting percentage of all time, but many in baseball can hardly believe that neither of these pitchers were voted with 100-percent of the vote total.

Johnson won an unprecedented five Cy Young Award honors, 303 games over his 22-year career, pitched two no hitters and won the 2001 World Series with the Arizona Diamondbacks; and will now be enshrined in Cooperstown.

Johnson was not too shabby as a USC Trojan either, along with his photojournalism major that propelled his current career as a professional photographer. In his final season at USC, Johnson led the team with 118.1 innings pitched, 99 strikeouts and six starts before declaring for the draft.

In 1984 he led the team with 26 appearances and in 1983 he was the team leader with three saves. The man who owns the all-time save record, current head coach Dan Hubbs, had some kind words for a fellow Trojan great.

Johnson will be inducted July 26 as part of the Hall's Induction Weekend July 24-27 in Cooperstown, N.Y. Fight On, and for the third time in USC baseball history one of the best in the business will be a National Baseball Hall of Famer.

The 6-foot-3 right-hander looked good in red, striking out one in a hitless inning.

On Sunday evening in San Diego, USC commit Drew Finley stood out despite playing with the country's best.

Fifty-two of the best high school baseball players in the nation laced up their spikes and battled for East Coast/West Coast bragging rights in the Perfect Game All-American Classic. The annual event at Petco Park features some of the top prospects in high school baseball every year and showcases a number of players that will hear their names called in the early rounds of the next MLB Draft.

But in a game that featured a ton of great pitching, including half of the 18 pitchers throwing 95+ mph, Rancho Bernardo HS (San Diego) right hander Drew Finley saw his name flashing on the scoreboard at the game's conclusion.

Thanks to the West Team's sixth inning offensive explosion for five runs in a game that had featured only two baserunners prior, Finley was the winning pitcher after having pitched a 1-2-3, scoreless top half of the sixth inning.

Finley topped out at 92 mph, sitting at 88-91. He also used a 76 mph curveball with good downward tilt to finish off the inning with a strikeout.

Trojan fans and USC head coach Dan Hubbs will now have to play the waiting game. Finley can not officially commit until November, but the waiting game doesn't stop there. Drew Finley will have to spurn the overtures and allure of professional baseball as he will likely be selected at some point in the 2015 MLB Draft. Nearly all of the Perfect Game All-Americans are picked at some point in the 40-round draft each year.

While high-profile players, such as Drew Finley and the rest of the All-Americans, do not typically make it to college campuses rather than signing with an MLB club, it does happen. USC had four participants in the 2012 PGAA Classic at Petco Park.

While USC commits Dominic Smith (No. 11 overall to the New York Mets), J.P. Crawford (No. 16 to the Philadelphia Phillies) and last-minute signee Rowdy Tellez (a 30th round selection who received second round money) all turned the opportunity to become Trojans, fellow PGAA Classic alum Jeremy Martinez turned down the Chicago Cubs' offers and was a fixture in the USC lineup becoming a Freshman All-American this season.

USC's only commit in the 2013 PGAA Classic was Jacob Gatewood, who ended up signing with Milwaukee after being drafted No. 41 overall.

After the game, Drew Finley talked about the opportunity to play in the PGAA Classic, being the winning pitcher, the possibility of him ending up in cardinal and gold, what he liked about USC and mixing it up with the three UCLA commits that were also on the West Team.

Check out the interview with Rancho Bernardo High School RHP Drew Finley:

Players are spanned out across the nation for some baseball.

USC Baseball finished a strong bounce back year, increasing its win total by nine games and finishing over .500 for the first time since 2005, and the squad now embraces the grind of Collegiate Summer Baseball.

Many of the Trojans will be heading East, while the local products will also have plenty of work to accomplish close to home so here's what's up for Dan Hubbs' club.

The USC to the MLB pipeline continues following MLB Draft Weekend

While USC is most heralded for producing the most first round picks in NFL Draft history, the 12-time National Champion USC Baseball program is not too shabby when it comes to producing future MLB talent.

One of the last four teams left out of the NCAA Tournament, the much-improved USC squad (29-24, 16-14) were led right off the top by Friday night ace, and First Team All-Pac-12 Selection Wyatt Strahan. He was drafted 94th overall in the Third Round by the Reds, and ginger "Big Red" has just signed his slot-valued professional contract.

Strahan finished the season on a strong tear of 7-plus inning starts, finishing with a 6-5 record following his last start of the year (7 IP, 2 ER) against No. 1 Oregon State allowing a career-high 8 walks against the conference's best and most offensive patient attack. He really did settle in during Pac-12 play however, amassing an impressive 2.92 Pac-12 ERA.

Knowing for his great fastball, which touched 95-96 as the game progressed, Strahan finished with a team-high 89 strikeouts this season. Nicknamed Donkey, Strahan threw more than six innings with 100 pitches or more in all but two of his starts this year. This following a completed two-year transition from Trojan closer to eventual ace starter.

NIGEL NOOTBAAR

Part of a Trojan legacy that spans four generations, the next brand of Nootbaar has been drafted by the Baltimore Orioles in the 12th Round. Nigel, who worked primarily out of the bullpen the last two seasons, only played in nine games this season but has electric stuff that was showcased rather well in the Cape Cod League last summer.

He was the first Trojan to be drafted by the Orioles since Damon Buford was drafted in 1990, but it may have actually been "Nigel Nootbaar" that drew great MLB Draft discussion. Trojan fans will hear the Nootbaar name for years to come as his brother, Lars (2016), is also committed to play baseball for USC.

Over the past three seasons, Nigel made 43 appearances, striking out 69 batters through 99 complete innings with three saves and it will be interesting to see where Nootbaar gets slotted. Since he is located just outside the profitable top 10 rounds, money may be tough to come by for the junior. Evaluating his limited collegiate stock and family lineage, the Orioles might have some leverage over Nootbaar, who is expected to sign right away.

BOB WHEATLEY

The older brother to fellow Trojan Brent, "All Business Bob" Wheatley will be going to work for the Toronto Blue Jays as the 774th pick in the 24th Round. Better pack some extra suits as Wheatley will certainly have his crafty mind on both the baseball diamond here in the states and possibly playing across the border in the near future.

Coach Hubbs spent a great deal of time working with Bob in film, who compares himself to Tom Glavine in the way he throws strikes and uses pitch ability to work the count, refocusing that delivery and fine tuning his overall game. As one of the four-year Trojans, his mission to turn USC back into an NCAA Tournament team was almost complete.

Wheatley started the year on an incredible tear, slashing through top-10 Cal Poly (7 IP, 10K) while posting a minuscule ERA through his first five starts. After an impressive outing against UCLA, Wheatley finished with a 7.44 ERA in Pac-12 play. His 6-foot-5 frame and ability to locate in the zone however, is what will keep him afloat in the minors.

KEVIN SWICK

The former walk-on who epitomized what it meant to be a Trojan baseball player on a daily basis, La Canada native and Loyola High School standout Kevin Swick worked his way into being drafted by the Chicago White Sox in the 22nd Round, following in the footsteps of fellow Trojan Joe DePinto (2011, 21st).

Swick finished his four-year career with a .284 batting average through 174 games, collecting 167 hits, including a team-high 61 hits this past season. Swick also excelled in the classroom, earning All-Pac-12 First Team Academic Honors and Capital One All-American Academic Honors with his stellar 3.83 USC GPA.

"It's kind of been a dream come true," Swick told the La Canada Valley Sun. "As a little kid, every little kid who plays baseball dreams of playing for a major league team. Just to get this opportunity, I'm so blessed. I'm so thankful to have my parents and my brother, who supported me."

The graduating senior may have an excellent future in the business world, interning for Fidelity Investments in Boston last summer all while being dean's list honoree from 2010-2014 in Marshall School of Business. Best of luck to Mr. Swick. These opportunities come around once in a lifetime so play some baseball, then make your real money.

JAKE HERNANDEZ

While he was not drafted over the weekend, senior captain Jake Hernandez was signed by the New York Yankees and expects to immediately suit up for short-season summer ball in Staten Island. Starting as the full-time first baseman this season, Hernandez put together his best season yet hitting a team-best .327 with 20 RBIs in Hubbs' cleanup spot.

Hernandez passed on an opportunity to play for the Detroit Tigers as a 22nd Round selection back in 2010, but now at 22, he can look back on what has been a valuable educational and athletic experience as a four-year player for USC Baseball.

He was one of the main staples to the fun-loving #Barrio band of brothers, he helped develop Garrett Stubbs into the Pac-12 Honorable Mention defensive performer he's become, all while holding freshman All-American Jeremy Martinez under his protective wings in the batters box right behind him in the lineup and watching him grow in a fatherly role.

KEEP GRINDING ALONG

These five players are now working to join the 107 Trojans that have ever suited up in the big leagues. While the journey ahead is certainly filled with plenty of trying moments, the up-and-coming talents like Kyle Twomey, Kyle Davis, Dante Flores, and Timmy Robinson among others, who can't wait for their chance at the MLB Draft next season.

Another top USC recruit will certainly be heading to the MLB farm system right out of high school.

Once regarded as a top-five talent, USC commit and long-time Trojan supporter Jacob Gatewood (Clovis, Calif.) heard his named called as the 41st overall pick in the 2014 MLB First Year Player Draft by the Milwaukee Brewers.

At 6-5, 200 pounds, the power-hitting shortstop prospect dropped farther down than many expected following a somewhat underwhelming senior season, but still represented himself well in New Jersey for the MLB Network's Live First Round studio coverage.

If the name Gatewood rings a bell, well it turns out the USC commit has some unique ties to Los Angeles. The son of Henry Gatewood, the Dodgers First Round Pick in 1982, and born in the same area as former Trojan and current Oakland A's pitcher Ryan Cook, Jacob Gatewood has an experienced circle leading him through the exciting process.

The Clovis High School product turned some heads last summer when he won the All-Star Game Junior Home Run Derby at City Field, which also happens to be the last time he was in the New York area before the actual MLB Draft, and then he turned around and also won the Under Armour All-America Game's Home Run Derby at Wrigley Field.

The talent is certainly there for some immediate minor league success but much like the bevy of players that will be selected over the 39-Round MLB Draft, nothing is for certain at the next level. Gatewoo certainly has his eyes set on playing right away in the minors, which means Dan Hubbs will not be getting his hands on this talented prospect.

Gatewood joins the recent ranks of 2013 First Round Draft Picks Dominic Smith (New York Mets, 11) and J.P. Crawford (Philadelphia Phillies, 16) that have been committed to USC with the larger intention of declaring for the big leagues from the very start.

College Baseball recruiting is a completely different animal than football and basketball, so offering these top-name recruits is seen around the recruiting circles as a positive way to put your name out there, possibly in the hopes of landing talented kids like a Jeremey Martinez (Freshman All-American) for example, who slip below their expected draft grade and decide to play baseball for USC.

While Gatewood loved the Cardinal and Gold, even attending the Stanford/USC game, his chances of playing any games on USC's Dedeaux Field are slim to none. That said, keep an eye out for USC Baseball ace Wyatt Strahan (First Team All-Pac-12 Selection) to hear his name called in the second or third round of the MLB Draft later this weekend.

The Trojans hopes will now rest in the NCAA Selection Committee.

USC Baseball entered the final weekend of the season in desperate need of some wins, not only to build upon their first winning season since 2005 but also to try and sneak right back into the NCAA Tournament discussion.

Battling the No. 1 team in the nation during a pitching centered three-game set from Dedeaux Field, the Trojans ended up victorious taking two of the three games from the friendly confines, moving their record to 29-24 (16-14) this season.

GAME ONE: USC Won 4-2

The Trojans, who were projected to finish 9th in Pac-12 Preseason Coaches Poll, concluded their successful season by overcoming strong Oregon State pitching with an equally impressive outing from sophomore Kyle Davis, propelling USC to a 3-1 victory securing their 5th place finish as one of the top surprises in the conference.

Davis was called upon by head coach Dan Hubbs to take the rubber on Sunday after throwing 1.2 IP of scoreless baseball, notching his 9th save of the season in the process, to give USC the 4-2 victory in Game One. That game was dominated by Frankie Rios, who went 2-4 offensively with a triple and two clutch RBIs in the fourth inning.

But on Sunday Kyle Davis was actually fantastic, outstanding and downright dirty at certain points of the game. Davis went the distance, striking out 14 Beavers hitters, including Pac-12 Offensive Player of the Year Michael Conforto with a nasty change up in the 8th inning, while only allowing one unearned run on five hits to secure the series win.

The Trojans needed some outstanding pitching this weekend to battle the Beavers staff that finished out the weekend with a Pac-12 Best 2.12 team ERA on the season. It was definitely on full display Saturday when starter Ben Wetzler (the Pac-12 POY last season) threw a strong CG shutout, even without his best strikeout stuff on the bump.

Offense came in limited bunches, amassing just seven runs against this powerhouse staff, and the biggest blows came from unheralded contributors Omar Cotto Lozada, Frankie Rios and Reggie Southall. Rios stepped up for the injured Dante Flores, Cotto Lozada collected three hits during the series, and Southall drove in the winning run on Sunday.

USC currently sits No. 60 overall in the most recent RPI rankings, but have faced the 24th toughest strength of schedule in the nation. The Trojans finished tied for 5th in the Pac-12 (edging out Stanford in regular season head-to-head) but will need some major chips to fall their way if they want to be heading for postseason play this week.

Long story short: Big series win for the future of the USC program and the Beavers have won the Pac-12 Conference and will host the Corvallis Regional next weekend as the No. 2 National Seed in the 2014 NCAA Tournament. The announcement will take place on Monday at 9 p.m. PST on ESPNU, so get your postseason popcorn ready.

We spoke with Connor Pelton of Building The Dam to preview the series.

The Trojans (27-23) finish off the regular season as host to the No. 1 team in the nation Oregon State for a three-game series at Dedeaux Field. USC leads the Beavers in the series 48-25 and have won 25 of the 34 meetings at home, which means history favors USC to win some important games this weekend.

USC secured its 34th winning season at home over the past 40 years from Dedeaux Field and now the Trojans welcome the nation's best squad to these friendly confines. The last time these two teams met, the Beavers swept USC up in Corvallis but the Trojans have actually won the season series in two of the last three meetings dating back to 2011.

Oregon State is one win away from the Pac-12 Title and USC needs to sweep the Beavers to keep their slim postseason hopes alive, so we welcome Connor Pelton of Building The Dam to preview the all-important final series of the regular season.

1. Once again Oregon State has one final series to clinch the Pac-12 Regular Season crown, so how does OSU approach this series? Is it a must-win series?

CP: Depends on your definition of must-win. I would say no since it is not like the season is over if we don't win the Pac-12. There will be more important games to play in the very near future no matter what happens this weekend. But I wouldn't disagree if someone thought it was. Losing the league crown after being two up with three to play might mentally damage this team so much that it affects them in Regional play next week.

2. The Beavers are now No. 1 in the nation, after sticking inside the top five for most of the season. What has been the biggest key for OSU's success this season?

CP: Tremendous pitching. Specifically from the three starters. Parts of the batting order have slumped at times, and the bullpen has been inconsistent. But every time Ben Wetzler, Andrew Moore, or Jace Fry takes the mound, I'm confident we'll come out on top.

3. Michael Conforto is an absolute beast, just plain and simple, but who are some outstanding players on this team USC should look out over the course of this series?

CP: Leadoff hitter Jeff Hendrix has been on a tear lately. He's batting at a .371 average and has 27 RBI's on the season. He provides a great spark at the start of the order. I would also watch out for senior Kavin Keyes. He returned to action Tuesday after missing more than a month with a fractured thumb, and he enters the weekend with seven doubles and 19 RBI's.

4. What USC player or match up gives you the most concern heading into the series?

CP: Closer Kyle Davis definitely intrigues me. He has been dominant in save situations and if he is in, I'd say the Trojans have a good shot at getting the win since the Beavers are not a good come-from-behind club in the later innings. I think catcher Jake Hernandez and infielder Blake Lacey could cause some problems at the plate.

5. USC has faced some outstanding pitching this season and it seems that once again the Beavers are led by some strong aces, tell us more about Ben Wetzler and his stuff.

CP: The only thing that can stop Wetzler is a butthurt Phillies organization and a few too many drinks. On the mound, he'll dominate opponents with his command and good movement on his low 90's fastball. He'll attack hitters, even when he gets behind in counts. His ability to get outs after going down 2-0 or 3-1 is crucial to his success.

6. Prediction for the series, and how far do you think OSU can go in this postseason?

CP: The Beavers will likely take two games, but I can't tell you which ones since the starting rotation is up in the air. They will at least leave Los Angeles with a share of the Pac-12 championship, and have a great chance at winning it outright. As far as the postseason goes, the sky is the limit. I don't want to be overly confident, but I could definitely see the Beavers playing deep into the College World Series.

7. How valuable is head coach Pat Casey?

CP: Casey is extremely valuable, and because of his effort and excellent work, the program would still be in great shape if he left it tomorrow. To be honest, I didn't start following Beaver baseball until 2004, so I've never truly known anything less than great success. And that's because of him.
