On the first scrimmage of fall camp, the gatorade athlete of the year may have all but locked up the starting job. While Matt Fink and Jack Sears struggled, true freshmen J.T. Daniels threw four touchdown passes, including three to his favorite target in high school Amon-Ra St. Brown, another standout in the scrimmage. He threw another to Velus Jones Jr.
Fink only managed to lead a field goal drive, while Sears did throw two touchdown passes but struggled with the pass rush. As Helton said, "it's scrimmage one. We've got a lot of practices to go." But this really puts the pressure on Sears while Fink seems to be falling out of the competition.
The highlight of the scrimmage was a perfect 35-yard touchdown pass by J.T. Daniels to St. Brown to the back of the end zone. Jay Tufele, a defensive tackle ranked 37th by rivals in 2017, continued to have a strong camp and recorded two sacks.
