As we get closer to the 2018 season, the watch list continues to drop. Lately USC has been receiving a lot of recognition in the preseason with numerous amount of players making watch list for multiple awards.
You can add another watch list to that count as USC senior cornerback Iman Marshall and senior safety Marvell Tell III were named to the Jim Thorpe award watch list Monday morning. The award is given to the best defensive back in the nation.
Iman Marshall skipped the NFL draft to return to USC for his senior season. The senior sophomore brings a physical presence to the corner position. His junior season saw good production with 52 total tackles (1 for loss) and 10 pass deflections. Marshall had to miss three games midway through the season due to a sprained knee injury he suffered in the loss against Notre Dame. Marshall was 2017 All-Pac-12 honorable mention.
Senior safety Marvell Tell III also opted to return to USC for his senior season. Tell had a very productive 2017 season which included 85 tackles (third on the team), 3 interceptions, a sack in all 14 games he started. Those stats placed Tell on the 2017 All-Pac-12 1st team. This is the second watch list the senior safety has made as he is also on the Bednarik award watch list, an award that is given to the best defensive player in the nation.
Marshall and Tell are looking to become the third USC defensive back to win the Thorpe award. Former Trojans safety Mark Carrier was the first to win the award back in 1989. Recently former USC Cornerback and current Tennessee Titans cornerback Adoree’ Jackson took home the Thorpe award in 2016.
