USC Trojans Escape Western Michigan

USC’s late surge vital to their 49-31 victory

Well, football’s back baby.

#4 USC Trojans triumphed over the Western Michigan Broncos 49-31 earlier this afternoon. Ronald Jones II decisive 37 yard touchdown midway thru the fourth quarter proved to be the deciding score. Marvel Tell III later finalized the conclusion, with a 37 yard pick-six with 3:13 left to play in the game.

Although Sam Darnold and company struggled throughout the game, they still managed to produce over 520 yards of offense. Darnold finished 23 of 33 for 289 yards with one rushing touchdown and two interceptions. Ronald Jones II began his darkhorse heisman campaign with 159 yards on 18 carries including three touchdowns.

After impressive opening offensive and defensive drives from the Trojans which lead to an early 7-0 advantage, Western Michigan responded with two impressive scoring drives to take a 14-7 lead early in the second quarter. Broncos QB Jon Wassink finished 11 of 22 for 67 yards and one touchdown while Broncos RB LeVante Bellamy ran for 102 yards on nine carries.

Following another Rojo touchdown late in the second quarter, the Trojans headed into half tied at 14. After WMU gained a 21-14 edge midway thru the third, the Trojans responded with a dominant quarter and a half. Included in this was true freshman Stephen Carr’s 52 yard touchdown run which extended the Trojan lead to 42-31 at the time.

The #4 USC Trojans will host the #14 Stanford Cardinals next weekend, Saturday September 9, 5:30 PM PST in the Coliseum.
