2017 NFL Draft: Kansas City Chiefs Select USC Trojans Safety Leon McQuay III

Trojans stake claim to another NFL team

NCAA Football: Rose Bowl Game-Penn State vs Southern California Kirby Lee-USA TODAY Sports

Senior USC Trojans Safety Leon McQuay III has been drafted by the Kansas City Chiefs in the 6th Round of the 2017 NFL Draft with the 218th pick overall.

Leon McQuay III is no stranger to the NFL. His grandfather, the late Leon McQuay, had a three year career in the NFL with the Giants, Patriots, and Saints during the 70’s.

During his 4 year career at USC, McQuay had 123 tackles, averaging 6.5 tackles for loss, and 5 interceptions. Many will remember McQuay’s key interception during the this year’s Rose Bowl Game to set up the game winning field goal to propel USC over Penn St.

McQuay is known to have good athleticism, speed, and ball skills, He has shown flashes of potential with the Trojans, however he has issues with consistent tackling and field awareness, which concerns some when playing him close to the line of scrimmage.

If McQuay can improve his consistency, then he could be a pretty solid steal for the Chief. Look for him to have an early role on special teams with Kansas City.

Fight On!
