One of the most irreverent USC blogs, Sports by Scondi, has returned to publishing now that the season is almost here. You should check out his week five recap of spring practice. A brief snippet is below:

“If the new kicker can nail 20–30 yard field goals with ease, he will have no problem as the starter. All the placekickers seemed to have a lot of leg.

The punters however are a completely different story. I don’t know if they were really trying, but during warm ups they couldn’t hit the end zone from midfield. That could be an issue when trying to pin opponents back inside their own territory. Although, if our punting is horrendous, maybe it will force Clay Helton to go for it on fourth down a lot more. Less cranberries, more cantaloupes.

They didn’t practice kickoffs, but I’m just going to assume that touch backs might be a rarity this year.

I could be completely off on all of this. Maybe Chase McGarth arrives to Fall practice and starts to kick like Justin Tucker.

You may not think kickers and punters are people but two of USC’s most defining moments last season were a 46-yard field goal to win the Rose Bowl (the good), and the punt against Utah in the fourth quarter to allow the comeback victory. (the bad).”
