USC adds another defensive tackle to their 2017 recruiting class. Jay Tufele announced that he will play for the USC Trojans. Tufele is rated as a 4-star and is ranked as the 3rd best defensive tackle in the country by 247 Sports composite.
The 6’2 280 lb defensive tackle out of Bingham High School in South Jordan, Utah had his choices narrowed down to USC, Utah Utes, and the Ohio State Buckeyes. In the end it was the Trojans that Tufele decided to commit to. Tufele adds some strength to a weak spot on the Trojans roster, the interior defensive line. USC is thin at defensive tackle and looked to build up through recruiting.
USC already has defensive tackle 4-star Marlon Tuipulotu enrolled early and a verbal commitment from 3-star defensive tackle Brandon Pili, so the commitment of Jay Tufele beefs up the inside of the defensive line. The Trojans also have Jacob Daniel, who is expected to be the next man up, returning next season.
You can expect Jay Tufele to be in the rotation at defensive tackle next season. Given that Clancy Pendergast loves to rotate on defense, Tufele could see some valuable time. He will have to compete for it as Tuipulotu will have a leg up on the competition by enrolling early in the spring.
