USC came out strong in the second half, and for a fleeting moment, they had made it a game. A 38 yard pass play to tight-end Tyler Petite set up a touchdown run from Ronald Jones. It capped an efficient nine play, 75 yard drive.

Renewed confidence didn’t last long, however. Stanford quickly took back momentum with another big play. Late in the 3rd quarter, a 56 yard touchdown end-around run by Michael Rector stretched Stanford’s lead to 27-10.
