USC Trojans head football coach Clay Helton is excited about Lynn Swann taking over as the new USC Athletic Director. He thanked Pat Haden for his service and wished him well. Also, today's Spring Game will be a less of a normal scrimmage and have more controlled game situations. Helton has placed an heavy emphasis on situational football and teaching a young team how to succeed in various important situations that arise in the game.

Clay Helton also stated the quarterback competition will likely continue on into Fall Camp. Despite initial reports that Helton wanted to have this competition wrapped up by the end of the Spring game. He apologized for the miscommunication, but it looks like right now USC will not have a starting quarterback named until August. If there is a clear standout after the Spring Game, however, he may still name a starter in the Spring. As of right now, though, the gap between Max Browne and Sam Darnold is too narrow for him to make that decision.

Helton said he is confident in his team and his players but has no way of truly knowing if his team is ready to compete with the likes of Alabama until they step on the field and play. They have progressed nicely, but Helton made it clear that they have a very long way to go and was incredibly grateful that they still have almost 30 more practices to go before their first game.
