In the 2016 edition of the USC vs UCLA rivalry the Bruins struck first when Fafaul hit Jordan Lasley for a 56 yard touchdown. Lasley would go into the stands to celebrate and would be flagged for unsportsmanlike conduct. The Bruins then kicked the ball out of bounds on the ensuing kickoff. The Trojans started their drive at the 50.

After picking up an initial 1st down the Trojans were bogged down and faced a 3rd and 17. Sam Darnold hit Juju Smith-Schuster for 16 yards bringing up a 4th and short. USC went for it and got it. Then Darnold went back to the air and hit Juju Smith-Schuster again this time for 28 yards. Juju would get the Trojans to the 1 yard line but injured his right arm. On the very next play Ronald Jones II would punch the ball into the end zone for the tying score.
