Max Browne has permission from USC to contact other schools about transferring

USC signed the permission-to-contact form allowing Browne to talk to other schools.

NCAA Football: Utah State at Southern California Kirby Lee-USA TODAY Sports

Max Browne is now free to pursue transfer opportunities anywhere in the NCAA now that USC has officially signed the permission to contact form. Max Browne is a redshirt junior who has already graduated and still with the team but now is free to be contacted by other schools to discuss transfer opportunities. Since Browne has already graduated he would be eligible to play right away at a new school instead of being forced to sit out a year.

Max Browne was a highly rated recruit out of the state of Washington. He sat behind Cody Kessler for three seasons and once Kessler left, Browne was the presumptive starting quarterback last spring. Talented but inexperienced redshirt freshman Sam Darnold, however, was also in the mix.

Last spring Helton had said he wanted to have his starting QB named by the end of spring practice. Darnold impressed coaches enough, however, that Helton could not make a decision at the time and extended the competition into the summer. Finally, a couple of weeks before the opening game of the season against Alabama Helton announced Max Browne would be the starter.

USC as a team was grossly unprepared in a 52-6 debacle. Browne went 14 for 29 and 101 yards against the Crimson Tide with one interception, no touchdowns and a QBR of 8.0. Browne performed a little better against Utah State in week 2 going 23/30 with 182 yards, two touchdowns, one interception and a QBR of 78.5. After losing 27-10 to Stanford and another sub par performance from Browne Helton had to make the switch. In Browne’s final start for the Trojans he went 18/28 191 yards, no touchdowns or interceptions and a QBR of 47.2.

While Max Browne cannot be blamed for the totality of USC’s many failures in the first three games of the season, the fact remained that the offense just was not working with Browne. Helton brought Sam Darnold in to start at QB for the Utah game, and though the Trojans did lose a heart breaker it was clear that Sam Darnold was the future of the USC Trojans.

When Helton made the announcement back in September the media was allowed to speak with Browne and naturally the press asked him about transferring. Browne said that thought immediately crossed his mind along with many other possibilities. Wherever Max Browne ends up hopefully he will find a place where he can realize his potential.
