Clay Helton was on Trojans live Monday night to discuss USC football. Helton provided his assessment of the Trojans following their win against Cal. He was impressed by the running game, and the defense. He also said that even though he wants the offense to be a balanced attack he was proud of offensive Coordinator Tee Martin sticking with the running game against Cal. Helton said that showed a tremendous amount of patience and maturity on Martin’s part.
On the topic of Tee Martin and the coaching staff, Helton was asked if Tee Martin has improved and developed as an offensive coordinator. Helton took the opportunity to assess the entire coaching staff:
“I think we have improved as an entire staff. You look at each position coach and each coordinator learning their personnel, I think we’ve gotten better in all three phases in game 1 to game 8. And now our challenge is to continue that. As you go through these, not only rivalry games, but very, very important games down the stretch we have to do some things to really clean up. To be honest with you, we are not a finished product. We’re playing good football, but there were still mistakes made in that game with penalties and turnovers that we have to clean up. Against an Oregon, a Washington, a UCLA, and a Notre Dame you are not going to be able to do some of the things we did in that game [Cal] and win a close game.”
On the injury front, Justin Davis is a possibility to play against Oregon but Coach Helton said it is more realistic for Davis to return the following week against Washington. As of now it appears as though Ronald Jones and Aca’Cedric Ware will once again be called upon to step up. Davis is still dealing with a high ankle sprain which makes it difficult for a runner to make a cut and change directions.
