Clay Helton joined Trojans Live earlier this week and discussed the big win over Arizona State and how his team continues to improve. He preached to the team the importance of doing the simple things better. It definitely seems to have paid off for the Trojans as they dominated the Sun Devils.
Helton credited the improved passing game, and the resurgence of Juju Smith-Schuster in large part on the running game. Arizona State’s defense needed to stop an excellent running back like Justin Davis that forced the Sun Devils to load the box against USC allowing Juju Smith-Schuster more opportunities to get open.
Justin Davis rushed for just 2 yards against Alabama, 70 on Utah State, and 63 against Stanford. Against Utah however Davis exploded for 126 yards on 10 touches despite not touching the ball in the 4th quarter. Davis went for another 123 yards the following week against Arizona State on 14 carries.
