Clay Helton, & Chris Hawkins joined Trojans Live to talk USC Football

Clay Helton, & Chris Hawkins were on hand discussing Arizona, the bye week and Cal.

USC head coach Clay Helton again joined the guys on Trojans live to discuss USC Football. Helton had high praise for most of the team but really had plenty of nice things to say about the USC secondary. Helton pointed to the secondary’s ability to limit the Arizona passing game to a mere one completion in the half. Guys like Chris Hawkins and others created turnovers as well as setting up excellent field position for the offense. Coach Helton said that turnovers and field position are the things that can turn a 7-7 game early to a 34-7 game at halftime.

The offensive line is playing well as a unit according to Helton and if a team is going to play well the offensive line has to step up and play well. After plenty of criticism that the USC offensive line took at the beginning of the season Helton is happy that the unit is stepping up. The coach credited the line for much of the offense’s success because the Trojans were on the road, with their top running back out and a young quarterback and the offense still put up 48 points.

Steven Mitchell Jr. is done for the season but Clay Helton said Mitchell has a good attitude and was already in the weight room working on his upper body while his knee gets better. Helton is also confident that Deontay Burnett and other receivers will be able to step up and continue the success of the passing game for the Trojans.
