Getting to the quarterback is key to success on defense in the Pac-12 Clay Helton said on Trojans live and he likes the aggressive nature of the defense and their ability to get to the quarterback. Clancy Pendergast has credited the defensive players getting more comfortable with what they are trying to do on defense and things are really coming together on defense. Furthermore Pendergast said they have plenty of guys who are fast and excellent at tackling in space. Playing against plenty of offenses that require a nickel defense actually plays to the defense’s strengths.
Freshman defensive end Oluwole Betiku Jr. came into the game against Colorado burning his redshirt. Helton said it takes a while for things to click with younger players and in the last two weeks things have clicked for Betiku. Betiku has shown great skill in pass rushing on third downs and Helton plans to use Oluwole particularly in those situations.
On offense Clay Helton is not as concerned with Justin Davis having a high ankle sprain as perhaps many others are. Davis will likely be out this week for Arizona but Helton is glad to have an off week following the Arizona game in terms of getting Justin Davis healthy and back on the field. Helton pointed out that Davis did not need crutches on Monday and was fine walking around in a boot. Helton said that while the offense did sputter against Colorado when Davis left the game he has confidence in Jones and Ware’s ability to move the ball on the ground in Davis’ absence.
