In a day filled with rumors about the USC Defensive Coordinator position and whether Clancy Pendergast would retake his old job, it was announced that John Baxter would once again be the Special Teams Coach for the Trojans. Baxter was initially hired by USC in 2010 and let go at the end of the 2013 season. He spent the 2015 season working for Jim Harbaugh at Michigan where the Wolverines had one of the most efficient special teams units in the nation.
""We are very excited to welcome back John Baxter to our Trojan Family," said Helton. "He is one of the most respected coaches in our profession at any position. His units have been near the top of the collegiate special team efficiency rankings almost every year. Having worked alongside him in the past, I know Coach Baxter as one of the best teachers and skill developers in football today. We look forward to our special teams rising to greater heights under him.""
Helton has largely filled out the offensive coaching staff, and Baxter is another key piece to the coaching staff. With reports flooding in that Clancy Pendergast will be the next Defensive coordinator at USC, Clay Helton's staff is coming together nicely with about a month left to go before national signing day.
