San Francisco 49ers rookie Marcus Martin suffered a setback on his path to possibly earning a sufficient backup role on the Niners offensive line this upcoming season. During the 49ers' third preseason game against the San Diego Chargers, the former Trojan captain was carted off the field.

Missing his NFL Pro Day recovering from a knee injury he suffered against UCLA last season, the Crenshaw product apparently suffered yet another knee injury Sunday afternoon at Levi's Stadium, the site of the 2014 Pac-12 Championship game.

Martin's left knee apparently got injured while he blocked on a Glenn Winston run with 11:11 remaining in Sunday's exhibition win. His legs got rolled up at the end of the play and according to Matt Maiocco of CSN Bay Area, the severity of the injury is not yet known. Plenty of Martin's former teammates reached out to wish their friend well.

Marcus Martin was in the midst of a productive training camp, figuring into the rotation right behind Daniel Kilgore. His former quarterback Matt Barkley has been announced the Philadelphia Eagles starter for the final preseason game. That means fellow Trojan great Mark Sanchez figures to be Chip Kelly's backup quarterback behind Nick Foles.

Earlier last week, Jim Harbaugh spoke fondly on the play of Marcus Martin during training camp:

"Marcus Martin had a very good game, a very physical game," Harbaugh told 49ers.com of the second-team center. "Great to get him back, get him going again."
