The long awaited day has come for USC Football, and the coaching staff just recently posted on the USC Athletics website that the highly-touted No. 1 football jersey will be worn by sophomore wide receiver Darreus Rogers.
Dating back to 2010, when coach Lane Kiffin stripped cornerback T.J. Bryant and receiver De'Von Flournoy of jersey No. 1 and decreed that the uniform number worn by All-American receiver Mike Williams was unavailable until further notice, the lowest number in the media guide holds some of the highest honors for playmaking weapons.
In a year in which incoming freshman Toa Lobendahn was stripped of No. 55 after famous Trojans called out the coaching staff for so freely handing out the esteemed number, Rogers received quite the honor heading into the season.
In his first eligible campaign with USC last season after missing all of his would-be freshman year due to academic ineligibility in 2012, Rogers developed quite the rapport with quarterback Cody Kessler right from the start of Fall Camp, eventually finishing out the somewhat injury-plagued season with 22 catches for 257 yards.
After an impressive but also healthy Spring, Rogers should be in the mix as the Trojans second best receiving target. Never lacking in confidence over his game, Rogers sounds exuberant about taking on extra reps this Fall Camp as a player ready to become a critical --not just the one-time breakout-- option at Coach Sarkisian's disposal.
The Trojans current 101-man roster (four spots still open) was released over the weekend as we are now less than 50 days away from the rematch of last year's 45-20 blowout win over Fresno State in the Las Vegas Bowl.
The Trojans enter the season with newfound excitement, but will need pass-catching targets like Darreus Rogers to complement the bevy of talented running backs on the offensive side of the football. Bulldogs vs Trojans coverage
