It's been a long time coming, but it seems Jordan Adams is finally starting to live up to her McDonalds High School All-American reputation. Adams hit a big 3-pointer to give USC a one-point lead in overtime and grabbed an offensive rebound and put in a reverse layup to give USC women's basketball a late three-point lead.
Adams finished with 15 points on 6-of-10 shooting and had five assists to lead the Women of Troy (2-1) to a 90-85 victory in overtime at Long Beach State (2-1).
Alexyz Vaioletama led USC with 19 points on 8-of-12 shooting. She added six rebounds as well. Brianna Barrett and McKenzie Calvert had 14 points and 13 points, respectively, while Long Beach State's Benton Raven led all scorers with 22 points.
The Women of Troy dominated the first half, taking a 47-34 lead into the half. But Long Beach State came roaring back in the final 20 minutes. The 49ers started the half on a 12-0 run to trim the USC lead down to one point. From there the teams battled back and forth through the final 16 minutes of regulation and then another five minutes of overtime.
Lauren Spargo knocked down a corner 3-pointer to give Long Beach State the lead back 71-70 with four minutes remaining. The teams traded free throw makes down the stretch until Jordan Adams made a basket in the lane and was fouled with 29 seconds remaining, but she couldn't make the free throw to put USC up by two.
Instead, Alex Sanchez was fouled and made one free throw, but missed the second to tie the game. After grabbing the rebound, USC called a timeout with 11.6 seconds remaining, but Vaioletama fumbled the ball away and didn't get a final shot off in regulation.
It was more of the same in the overtime period with the teams battling back and forth. Courtney Jaco hit a big 3-pointer early in overtime, but Long Beach State responded with a 3-pointer on its next possession. Every time one team seemed to have the momentum, the other side squelched that with a big bucket until Jordan Adams knocked down a 3-pointer with 1:14 remaining.
After a missed three-point attempt from Spargo and a missed putback, USC cleared the ball and after Brianna Barrett airballed a floater, the ball was tapped around before ending up in the hands of Adams. She spun under the backboard and flipped up a reverse layup to give the Trojans a three-point lead. Spargo missed a game-tying 3-pointer from the top of the key and Barrett added two free throws in the final seconds.
