Reports: USC To Hire Bo Davis as Defensive Line Coach

According to media reports, USC will complete its coaching staff under Steve Sarkisian.

After spending most of his first month as USC head coach luring recruits and current players to buy into the system, Steve Sarkisian has reportedly filled the final void in his coaching staff with the addition of Texas defensive tackles coach Bo Davis.

Davis brings an elite pedigree to USC, after spending eight years coaching under Nick Saban at LSU, the Miami Dolphins and Alabama before taking the job under Mack Brown at Texas back in 2011. His experience, alongside the work of fellow coach Tim Drevno on the offensive line, give the Trojans two powerhouse coaches to run both sides of the line.

In 2010, Davis helped guide an Alabama defense that ranked fourth in the nation in scoring defense (13.5 ppg), fifth in total defense (286.4 yards per game), ninth in rushing defense (110.2 ypg) and seventh in pass efficiency defense (103.5), while leading the SEC in all four categories. A native of Magee, Miss., Davis graduated from LSU in 1993 and then served as a graduate assistant with the LSU strength and conditioning program from 1995-1997.

Wherever Davis has traveled over the course of his coaching tenure, immediate success has followed. Davis now comes to Southern California to coach a defensive line which features ESPN.com First-Team All-American defensive tackle Leonard Williams.

He can also utilize defensive line stud J.R. Tavai (8.0 TFL, 3.5 Sacks), who former interim head coach Ed Orgeron called possibly "the most talented player on this team," during the regular season.

In terms of the up-and-coming talent on the Trojans defensive line, USC will lean on junior college transfer Claude Pelon and Texas Tech transfer Delvon Simmons, who will both be eligible next season. That being said, Mike Piellucci of 247Sports says Davis will have plenty of opportunities to reload the defensive line in future years.

His real work on the recruiting trail begin next year, however, when California will host a bumper crop of talented defensive linemen including Rasheem GreenKahlil McKenzieJacob Daniel (a former commit at Washington to Sarkisian) and Joseph Wicker.

The next challenge for USC will be to utilize its full staff, which has finally come together under Sarkisian, and hit the ground running on implementing a new system on both offense and defense. Keep in mind Clay Helton and Tee Martin are the only assistants returning from Lane Kiffin's staff from this past season.
