USC squeaks out a win against ASU

USA TODAY Sports

What a wild game on Senior Day!

'SC dominated yesterdays game until around midway through the 2nd half. Then ASU slowly crept back in.

Both teams came out sloppy with USC scoring the first points of the game about three minutes into the game. There were a ton of turnovers as well.

It is hard to get a read on this team. Last week the team looked absolutely horrible against UCLA, then they pull out a great win against Arizona.

This could be a scary team in the Pac-12 Tournament...

USC improved to 7-5 under Cantu, but two days removed from their impressive 11-point victory over No. 11 Arizona, the Trojans narrowly avoided a massive collapse on Senior Day against the Sun Devils.

''At the end of today, I just wanted to smile and walk away with a win, and that's what I got,'' Fontan said.

Arizona State entered the game shooting 45.7 percent from the field this season, second-best in the conference, and in the teams' first meeting, the Sun Devils beat USC 98-93 in overtime.

Saturday's game couldn't have been any different. USC started the game with a 2-3 zone defense and did a good job of contesting Arizona State's perimeter shots. The Sun Devils looked lost. With four minutes left in the first half, USC led 28-9, and the Sun Devils had as many turnovers as points.

Jio Fontan fouled out and was replaced by walk-on freshman Chass Bryan who had two assists and zero turnovers in 18 minutes of play.

For a change the inconsistent Pac-12 refs sent a call USC's way after it was determined that Eric Wise was fouled when the shot clock expired while rebounding JT Terrell's missed shot with 20 seconds left.

It was that type of game...

Either way we'll take the win. USC finishes off the regular season in Washington this week then its off to the Pac-12 Tournament. It is looking like they will play Utah in the opening round, a win will pit them against UCLA who Arizona last night to gain a share of the conference top spot.

Of course the big question will be can USC make the Big Dance.

That is a bit of a dilemma.

There is all sorts of talk out there about who USC should go after to be the next head Basketball coach. If interim coach Bob Cantu gets the team to the tournament does he deserve the job?

He isn't staying to be an assistant under the new coach, not after turning things around when Kevin O'Neill was fired.

That would be a slap in the face.

But that talk is for another day...
