While the pulse of the Los Angeles basketball world is centered solely around Staples Center for Game 1 of the NBA Finals between the Lakers and Celtics this evening, news cycling out of the UCLA medical center is saying that the Bruins' legendary basketball coach John Wooden has been hospitalized and is presently in "grave condition." Per SI.com:

KCAL9/CBS2 reported that Wooden, 99, was in "grave" condition after being hospitalized Sunday and he has refused to eat for the past couple of days.

A UCLA spokesman could not immediately confirm the report.

Rivalry and USC fandom aside, I think I speak for all members of the Trojan Family in saying that our thoughts and prayers are with Coach Wooden and his family.

Update #1: Tweet from Pete Carroll:

Thank you Coach Wooden for all your inspiration & guidance. I'll always live knowing your influence & extraordinary genius.

Update #2: Wooden "Resting Comfortably"

From UCLA Sports Information Director Marc Dellins:

Coach John Wooden is resting comfortably at the Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center and spent a peaceful night. He was admitted to the hospital on Wednesday, May 26 due to dehydration. At the request of the family, no other information regarding Coach Wooden's condition will be released.

Members of the Wooden Family and UCLA staff are not available for interviews regarding Coach's condition.

There will be an update this afternoon.

(Note: Please be respectful and refrain from any Wooden/Sam Gilbert bashing. You can talk about that any other day - just not now. Life is more important than the se little "rivalries.")
