Gillespie owns USC

I know we don't cover a lot of baseball here on CC but this is just too good to pass up...

USC baseball put up a fight against No. 1 UC Irvine on Tuesday, but fell apart in the ninth inning and let the Anteaters walk off with then 6-5 win, almost exactly as they had done more than a month ago at Dedeaux Field.

USC (21-20) held the lead from the second inning on, and it looked as if it was going to pull off the upset of the nation’s top team. But Irvine (31-11) took advantage of some pitching mistakes in the ninth, and took the win with a two-run single.

The situation was strangely familiar for the Trojans, who in a March 10 contest at Dedeaux, held the lead heading into the ninth, but ultimately fell 6-5 in a 12-inning battle.

It only took nine innings for the Anteaters to win on Tuesday, but the result was just as disappointing.

This win makes former USC baseball skipper Mike Gillespie 4-0 against SC.

Now I'm not going to say that we should have kept Gillespie, he was struggling and Garrett rightly or wrongly needed to make a change. But it is clear that the change in jobs gave him a little spark to his career.

I had more of a problem with Garrett hiring Kreuter than I did the firing of Gillespie. Kreuter was hardly qualified for the job and we seeing those results right now, I don't care if they were on a hot streak earlier this season the overall product is poor.

This sure aint like the old days when it comes to USC baseball...
