Baseball Season Begins

USC opened baseball season with a 16-9 rout of Florida International.

Here is the Official Box Score.

From the USC website:

Senior designated hitter Mike Roskopf (Prescott, Ariz./North Carolina State) capped a six-run third inning Friday with a grand slam as the USC Trojans opened the 2008 season with a 16-9 victory against the Florida International Golden Panthers. Roskopf finished with a 3-for-5 performance and five RBI as the Trojans matched their highest total for a season opener since 1998 when USC defeated Long Beach State, 16-4.

The Trojans hammered out 16 hits with three-hit nights from center fielder Nick Buss, right fielder/first baseman Anthony Vasquez and third base/shortstop Hector Rabago. Vasquez and Buss later homered in back-to-back at-bats for the Trojans, who only had 25 home runs as a team last season.

Sophomore right-hander Brad Boxberger (Tustin/Foothill HS) earned the win, allowing four runs in five innings. All four runs came in the FIU fourth after Boxberger threw three no-hit innings with five strikeouts.

We're going to do our best in watching the baseball team this season though it will be tough to offer any really objective analysis without actually being able to attend the games or see them on TV. This is a make a break or break season for 2nd year head coach Chad Kreuter as he is expected to get SC back to prominence in the Pac-10.

If anyone out there on the west coast is able to attend the games please write up your thoughts and observations in the Diaries and I will move them to the main page. This is a good start for the team so lets see how they progress.
