SC Takes Two Straight From UW

SC got back on the winning track last night with an 8-5 win in the first game of a three game set against the Huskies in Seattle. Brad Boxberger allowed 1 run in 7 innings of work.

Freshman Grant Green went 2-for-4 with three RBI while senior Hector Estrella and sophomore Anthony Vasquez collected three hits each for USC (20-19, 3-7). Senior closer Paul Koss was able to secure the win after Washington (19-17, 5-5) rallied for four runs in the bottom of ninth and had a chance with runners at second and third with the tying run at the plate.

USC clinged to a 2-1 lead after five before pushing across three runs in the sixth. Green delivered his eighth triple of the season with a two-run shot to right to score Vasquez and Estrella. Matt Cusick followed with an RBI single to the gap in left center.

UW made a rally in the bottom of the 9th but SC hung on for the win.

Today SC won its 2nd straight beating UW 5-2. This time it was Ryan Cook going 8 innings giving up 2 runs and scattering 8 hits.

Senior closer Paul Koss (Orange/Orange Lutheran HS) earned his second save in as many days to record his 14th save of the season and the 34th of his career. He ties his season total from his 2005 sophomore season, the third-highest in school history.

Koss allowed two singles in the ninth before striking out Jake Rife, who represented the tying run, on a 3-2 pitch to end the game. Senior catcher Johnny Bowden led the Trojans with three hits and one RBI on the afternoon.

USC is now 21-19 overall and 4-7 in Pac-10 Conference play while Washington is 19-18 overall, 5-6 in conference.

USC goes for the sweep tomorrow, game time is at 1:30 PT.
