USC grinds one out against the Ducks

USCLink has this up in the diaries as well.

SC beat the previously undefeated Oregon Ducks last night in Eugene. And it was a close one at that. The Ducks had a 41-35 half-time lead when SC came out to play in the 2nd half.

USC has defeated three consecutive ranked opponents, none more improbably than its win over an Oregon team that was off to its best start in 69 years and had been especially tough to beat amid the head-splitting cacophony inside its creaky old gym.

Yet there was junior swingman Nick Young, making a fadeaway jumper from about 15 feet with 20 seconds left to give the Trojans an 83-81 lead they would not relinquish en route to another victory that will look good on their NCAA tournament resume.

"It's a big bounce-back from the last game," said Young, alluding to a charge he had committed in the final seconds of a three-point loss to Washington State. "I'm glad they still had faith in me."

They almost gave this one up with Nick Young fouling Aaron brooks with one second left while in the act of shooting a 3-pointer. SC dodged a bullet when Brooks missed 2 out of 3 free-throws.

Things are looking up with USC basketball but there is still a long way to go before we can produce with confidence on the national stage.
