Some Interesting Data for USC Fans!

Bumped...Our good friend BCS Busters has another great take on out of conference scheduleing. Paragon

In a recent article that can be found here:

Some interesting stats between USC and LSU:

In the final analysis, the fact that LSU fans continue to discredit a USC program, who in their mind competes in the Pathetic-10 or a West Virginia program who competes in the Big-Easy, while boasting of their own BCS accomplishments, the fact remains that the three best teams over the course of the last four seasons have yet to meet each other on the field.

The fact that LSU had an open date (they recently added Appalachian State) and could have easily scheduled West Virginia or USC this coming season (or in any of the past 5 seasons) speaks volumes to the dismay of college football in general and the BCS in particular, and is once again a glaring example of the BCS largess that the SEC holds over all of the other conferences.

Still disagree with this assessment?

Consider the following.  USC not only has a superior overall record as compared to LSU since the year 2002 (70 - 8 versus 64-15), but a better bowl record (5-1 versus 4-2).  USC not only has a superior QOF-Rating (22-5 versus 17-11), but has beaten more BCS non-conference opponents (19) than LSU has even played (12), and even more significant to the argument, has beaten more winning programs with 7 plus wins a seasons (37) than LSU has even played as well (36).

Of the 12 BCS teams that LSU has played since 2002,  8 had elite 9 (plus) win seasons.  Of the 21 BCS teams that USC has played since 2002, 15 had elite 9 (plus) win seasons.  Once again, USC has beaten more elite BCS non-conference opponents than LSU has even played (12).

Based on these numbers alone, how can anyone discredit USC and the fact that they have essentially been barred on many occasions from competing for the national championship when the numbers scream of the injustice.  Both USC and LSU were 8 points from a perfect season in 2007, why the discrepancy in the polls?

Appreciate the feedback Frak...
But one of the key points of the article is the fact that there is little difference between Arkansas, Pittsburgh and Stanford when taking Troy, North Texas, Florida International, Mississippi or Tennessee-Chattanooga out of the equation.

No disrespect intended BCS
I think I would say that in the minds of the media the loss to Stanford was an unforgivable offense, whereas a loss to Arkansas or Kentucky was not.

Collectively I agree with you.  USC hasn't dodged anyone, or padded their schedule with cupcakes in the pre-season.  All of LSU's smack talking is unfounded.  But if we are talking about last year, then we have to say that the reason we didn't go to the BCS championship game is Stanford.

No fan of yours
duh, but for anyone to knock the on-field accomplishments or mock the scheduling that USC has had the past several years is just a moron, or an LSU fan, which I suppose are functionally equivalent.

LSU
As an SC fan, the only thought I have given to LSU over the years has been when they have lobbed an insult in our direction.  I really don't care what LSU does or how they play.  They seem to have a massive inferiority complex.  It makes no sense to me at all, but it would seem that the split championship in 2003 is the reason why.

I hope we get a chance to play them one day so that they will finally shut their collective trap.

Agreed, except for your final point
Given the fact that we weren't anywhere near the NC this past year when LSU won it outright and STILL there were posts b*tching and moaning about 2003 on message boards after that, the only conclusion that can be drawn is that they're never going to shut up about it... ever.

Which is exactly my point regarding all the SEC...
HYPE!  Until people begin to realize what is actually occurring, or more importantly why it is occurring, the rest of the nation is going to have to withstand this constant banter regarding how good they are, when in reality (the numbers speak for themselves) they are not any different than any of the other conferences.

How good Alabama was in the 1970's has nothing to do with how Alabama is today (which is pretty dawgone average by the way), but yet how are they perceived by the national media?

When will people quit buying all the garbage regarding their self-fulfilling superiority complex and start calling a spade a spade?

This from Adam Rose-
The LA Times USC blogger has this tidbit in his column:

What if the Trojans played in another conference? "In the last seven years under Carroll, USC would've won the SEC title same amount of times it won the Pac-10 title: six." -- John Hays, Sporting News

Actually,
I found John Hays (Comments from the Sporting News)...pretty damn funny if you ask me.

 Matt,

In response to Pete Carroll's comments, "Other coaches are lazy." Carroll coaches at USC, the only team west of Texas that recruits itself.

Someone should tell him to work on his game-day coaching instead of his jump shot and maybe a 41-point underdog won't beat him again this year. Put Pete Carroll in the SEC and he's Houston Nutt.

Marty Giacone

Marty,

Let's take these one by one, shall we? USC doesn't recruit itself; far from it. Just ask Ted Tollner, Larry Smith and Paul Hackett, who combined to win

89 games in 13 seasons at Troy. Carroll, meanwhile has won 76 games and two national titles in seven seasons. Either Carroll is a terrific coach working magic with average players, or Tollner, Smith and Hackett couldn't recruit to save their very coaching lives. Or could recruit and couldn't coach.

Either way, Carroll looks pretty damn good by comparison -- against them, or any other coach in USC's storied tradition.

As for Carroll in the SEC? Well, the Trojans have played two SEC teams since Carroll arrived in Los Angeles in 2001 -- the only two willing to schedule a series (let's not even get into that). The Trojans won two games each against Auburn and Arkansas by a combined 167-48.

Seriously, I know you SEC fans are little froggy because of the back-to-back national titles from Florida and LSU. But please, don't try to bring USC into your "we're better than you" argument. In the last seven years under Carroll, USC would've won the SEC title same amount of times it won the Pac-10 title: six.

Go back to taking shots at the Big Ten. It's much easier.

Good one!
The Big 10?

So, Pete Fiutak at FoxSports has USC in the Rose Bowl (again?) vs. Wisconsin.

He thinks even if 'SC beats OSU this season, that OSU would still make it to the BCS game vs. Florida.

I don't know what I like better from a Trojan standpoint: USC, the pre-season #1, going wire-to-wire in an excruciatingly tough run up and (hopefully) into the BCS championship game or . . .not being picked to make it to the BCS game and working through the "normal" expectations of a CFB season and (again, hopefully) being in the hunt for a BCS championship game berth?

It's a mystery wrapped in a conundrum.
