Two possible new defensive players

Recruiting Defense

From the LA Daily News: USC has a couple of possible additions on the defensive side of life: Shane Horton, a transfer freshman safety from UNLA who started or played in every game last year, is transferring to USC. If he can get cleared in the next 2 weeks, he'll be eligible to play in the fall. His brother, Wes Horton, is a USC commitment at strongside defensive end; Rivals thinks he's a potential all-American.

Speaking of, USC also picked up a verbal commitment from Malik Jackson, a weakside defensive end from Birmingham High in Lake Balboa. Rivals has him rated as a potential All-American also - but for both Jackson and Horton the Younger, ob viously, there's the minor detail of signing on the dotted line and actually playing the games.

"A Secondary Violation"

Hurrah! A new entry for a certain ucla blog's list of offenses! Per the LA Times, OJ Mayo received tickets to the Sunday Lakers - Nuggets game from Carmelo Anthony, which were pretty darn good. Apparently Anthony made the offer at a party which OJ Mayo attended on Saturday night.

The LA Times suggests that the critical issue was whether this was a personal gift from Anthony or a  benefit from the Nuggets:

It was not immediately clear if the NCAA would consider Anthony an agent of the Nuggets or merely an individual who gave tickets to a friend.

The tickets Mayo received were located behind courtside seats near mid-court and had a face value of $230 each.

A compliance director from another West Coast school said that although he did not have all the details, Mayo's actions could constitute a secondary violation and that the NCAA could order Mayo to donate the value of the tickets to charity.

Tell you what, I'll offer a little bit of free advice to USC's beleaguered Compliance Office: just make Mayo pay the face value of tickets to charity now and get it out of the way. I know the NCAA investigators are busy anyway, so give thema break and treat this as the picayune non-issue it should be: tell Mayo to pay up and to not do it again.

In the meantime, I'm sure that the folks across town will be drafting paperwork to have Mayo taken to the Human Rights Court in the Hague or something. After the rediscovery of optimism and happiness from the hiring of Norm Chow, it will be nice for them to get back to business as usual.

Update [2008-1-23 23:26:1 by DC Trojan]: Per the LA Times, Tim Floyd has indicated that he told Mayo it was all right to take the tickets and that he should be the focus of NCAA sanctions. The article further points out that Mayo and Carmelo Anthony have been friends for some years.

Therein lies the quandary
I can't possibly imagine the reality of a bruin not talking about a Trojan. Doesn't matter whether it's about "our thugs", our cheating Coach Carroll, our criminal coaching staff, our blah, blah, blah. . .- the folks across town will FOREVER KEEP HUGGING OUR NUTS. It's the weirdest hard-on ever!  They're like someone's friendly dog who constantly humps strangers' legs. Extremely odd and somewhat pitiful at the same time.

I find it hilarious
that a bruin poster reffered to our mens basketball players as "thugs", when the same day the bruin's women's basketball team has 3 players ejected for fighting.

that's not thuggery...
...that's the team ethos - all for one, and one for all. Or something like that.

Speaking of men's and women's bball. . .
. . .through 7 head-to-head competitions so far this year- we haven't LOST any points to fucla as it applies to the Lexus Gauntlet Trophy for the 2007/2008 school year. In other words, we've tied (in Gauntlet Trophy points) the bruins in 3 competitions, and smoked them in 4. Currently it's:

USC  - 35
UCLA - 1O

There's 11 more to go for the year.

I don't know about any of you guys, but it's been a bang-out-of-order-year! We obliterated Notre Dame at South Bend (f_ck yeah!), manhandled the pretty-boy-blues to tears in the Coliseum, women's x-country have a fantastic season, women's soccer win National Title, and recently we win both men's and women's bball games vs. ucla. Those kids on campus right now, prolly don't know how good the going is these days. It's goin' good for sure.

What good is Nestor's Litterbox
Without all the feces flinging.

And with all that Chow love over there, it was like going to Little Green Footballs and reading posts about how awesome Muslims are.

Happy Bruins are pointless.  After all, there are no UCLA fans, just USC haters.

Give me the bitter, vitriolic, over-excitable, USC hating dweebs any day.

It's gotten to be quite comical
The comments that came out of USC later on in the day yesterday were so funny.

1st off: Pink says he OK'd OJ Mayo use of tickets, not quite realizing it was not kosher. And then he goes ballistic on how stupid he thinks the rules for compliance are. If he's not the best PAC 10 coach, he's definitely one of the more loyal coaches. Not exactly a player's coach 'cause I don't think he is, but he'll take a hit and give a hit for his players. This is obvious.

2nd: OJ Mayo answers, "I went to the Clipper/Cavaliers game too!" to the compliance director who questioned him regarding the Lakers/Nuggets game.

I mean, what next from OJ? "Oh yeah, I went to the Charger's/Colt game, Mayweather/Hatton fight, and was hoping to have a chance to see Little Stevie Smith whup-ass on Marvin Harrison in the Super Bowl. What? That ain't cool? Ya gotta be kiddin' me? Dat's whack."

THIS is one situation, I'm sure were to get ribbed on as Trojans. It'll be fun. It's safe to say, I think we can endure. (I mean, we're still hammerin' away on the "parking placards" from way back when???)
