Around SBN: Explaining Jeremy Lin's Early, Surprising Success

Too Much Freakin' Hype

Here we go again...

You have to wonder just what some of the coaches in the Pac 10 are thinking. All the sloppy wet kisses that were thrown USC's way at yesterday's media day are just mind-boggling.  I realize that some of the opposing players aren't going to by into it (more on them later), that's to be expected, but the coaches? Why not just forfeit now and save us all the wear and tear. Heck if we're so great just hand us the trophy now and be done with it.

I am not interested in seeing a repeat of 2005. You could argue that the offensive side of the could be in the top 2 or 3 of all time but that defense was put together with spit and toilet paper. This year the defense will the unit to watch with some marquis players but the offense has some questions I don't care how many running backs we have.

I know I quoted some of this stuff earlier but when taken as a whole its just crazy, you have to read some of this stuff...

From Dennis Erickson:

Then there was first-year Arizona State Coach Dennis Erickson, who said, "You want my evaluation of USC? They should be in the league I was really successful in, the National Football League.

From Jim Harbaugh (a bit tongue in cheek)

"There's no question in my mind that USC is the best football team in the country," he said, "and maybe the best team in the history of college football."

Now from the players perspective.

From ucla's Bruce Davis, from Pat Forde's Article on ESPN.com:

With perspective thrown completely out the window, it was time to visit the lunch table occupied by UCLA coach Karl Dorrell and Bruins defensive end Bruce Davis. When told of Harbaugh's greatest team ever comments, Davis literally dropped his fork, sending it clanging against his salad plate.

Dorrell, as is his buttoned-down custom, wouldn't go there. Fork back in hand, Davis tried not to go there, either, but he couldn't help it when the subject was raised again a few minutes later. The UCLA players have spent their careers hearing how great their crosstown rival is, and even upsetting the Trojans last season obviously hasn't quelled the hype.

"Let me think about how I want to answer this," he said, rubbing his brow before plunging in. "If they would've won every game they played for as long as Pete Carroll had been there, maybe they could humor that. Maybe.

"I think that's part of the arrogance that comes with USC. They've earned that, but are they the best college football team ever? No. What about the great Oklahoma teams, the Miamis, the Florida States? ... They have no right to do that, and I think that's disrespectful to the history of college football.

"If people want to say they're the greatest, yeah, that's fine. But what does that make us, if we beat the best college football team ever?"

Well Bruce I would say...how about LUCKY!  We've gone down this road before. The fact is the bruins caught SC looking past them and SC paid the price for it. I have said it before and I will say it again...ucla's win defined their season. That was all they had to hang their hat on s they squandered the momentum they had going by losing to Half Assed U in some 3rd tier bowl game. Put another way, the highlight of your season is to say that you kept SC out of the MNC game. Great job guys, that's all you get.

And then there is this from Cal's MeSean, I mean DeSean Jackson from Jeff Miller's piece the OC Register:

His name is DeSean Jackson, and he plays receiver for Cal. Plays it very well, generally.

"I don't know about all the talk," he said of Trojans 24/7. "I mean, they lost all their receivers. They're a great team, a great program. But separating them from the rest of the conference? That's uncalled for."

OK, now we're getting somewhere.

"They lost last season to Oregon State and UCLA, teams we beat," Jackson continued. "That shows us right there they can be beaten. And this year, they gotta come to Cal. I ain't gonna support all this talk too much."

You're right MeSean we did lose to those teams and you did beat those teams but I seem to remember that WE beat you at the Coliseum or should I refresh your memory?

Remember this?!

I'm Glad you were able to get up though!

At least there was some common sense on Thursday.

From Jill Painters piece in the DN:

All this talk about how great USC is - and by one man's opinion, the best of all time - can get a little embarrassing.

"Sometimes it does," Booty said. "We don't feel we're worthy of (Harbaugh's statement). That's the kind of take we have, which is good. That's how it should be."

In essence, Booty doesn't want the Trojans to succumb to the hype either, but that was a tough task Thursday. Good thing freshmen weren't at the Sheraton Gateway near LAX. They would've flown back to campus without a plane.

So I hope its not 2005 all over again and that we can worry about the play on the field and not the crap from ESPN and the like.

yes it does...
Your season was defined by that win.

Like i said:

You and I both know that I am right. The losses to ND and Cal show just how bad things are over there. And while you have all that talent returning this season the coach is so out of touch that it will be tough for those players to keep their heads in the game.

cute trick with the comment BTW. I'll let it stay for now.

It was the highlight of the season
But that doesn't make it luck.  Perhaps the effort UCLA gave was one in a million, perhaps USC's effort was uncharacteristically poor, and maybe it was fortunate that one of the greatest plays in college football history (when else have you seen someone tip a ball turn around and make a diving interception 6 inches off the ground?) came at such a perfect time, but the game itself was not luck.  The game was close all the way, Carroll's half time adjustments didn't make a difference, and we hung on in the end.

if you want to argue semantics
...perhaps you can refer to it as a "fluke" instead. Claiming the pic was "one of the greatest plays in college football history" is a statement only a homer would make.

Yeah I agree with SB except for the
"Greatest play" remark.  I wouldn't put that pick anywhere near Flutie's hail mary.  I was the biggest upset last year in college football by far, I will give you that.

It took more skill
Time and time again Hail Mary's fail.  What was different about Flutie's?  Pure luck.

Does that make it a better play?
Not in my mind.

You want a great play, think VY's 4th down run for the MNC.  Or Matt Leinart's 4th and 9 pass to Dwayne Jarrett against ND.  Or Reggie's cutback against Fresno St.

McNeals pick was damn athletic, and a damn good play.  But at least in my mind, it doesn't compare to those others (and you can't make the argument that I'm being biased in favor of USC, because VY's run is more or less the antithesis of that).

Boise St. vs OU
The trick plays in the Fiesta bowl alone are on my list for greatest plays ever.

Am i the only one who isn't gaga over that game?
I mean, it was a great fourth quarter.  And I had a vaunted interest in the game (being from Texas, i root against OU, and my best friend goes to BSU).

That said, in my mind, there wasn't enough at stake.  There was no conference title, no national implications...it was an exciting end to a great game, but that's all it was.

Maybe 20 years from now, I'll look back at that game as the game which led to a CFB playoff (shudder), or as the game that destroyed the idea that mid majors couldn't compete with the top tier of the BCS conferences, but as is...meh.

I agree
For Oklahoma the game was completely meaningless.  If they win, nobody really cares.  If they lose, teams lose in bowl games all the time and nobody pays much attention (Notre Dame).  For Boise St, a win would validate that season and prove that every year non-BCS teams did matter.  OU was playing or nothing; BSU was playing for everything.

Another thing is that some of the key plays were huge mistakes.  The best example is the Oklahoma punt that hit the Boise St player.  That completely changed the game.  Also, Zabransky's pass thats was intercepted and returned for a TD was a terrible pass.  It was quite an accomplishment for him to recover and lead the team on the game tying drive, but that pass was just terrible.  I was also bothered by the fact that Boise St basically won on three last ditch trick plays.  I'm all for some trickery in the middle of the game to give your team an advantage, but when you're losing at the end of the game and you rely on a hook and ladder or a statue of liberty you're pretty much admitting that you aren't as good.

The best game ever in my opinion was Ohio St vs Miami.  There is nothing like college football's overtime when everything is on the line.

Let me get this straight
Are you saying that OU's first BCS game after losing the NC, and losing their starting QB, was meaningless to them?  If that's what you were saying then you don't know OU that well.

This is why that was such a great game.  No one outside of Oklahoma or Boise cared, until those plays happened.  Then everyone cared.

We aren't talking about best game ever, we were talking about best play ever.

by frak on Jul 30, 2007 10:25 PM PDT up reply actions

Relative to Boise St- yes
At the start of the game Oklahoma was clearly less motivated.

good point but...
Time and time again teams try and fail to beat the trojans.  What was different about UCLA's victory...pure luck??

I don't call it Luck

The ucla defense worked their butts off, contained our running game, and worked hard for that final pick that won them the game.  I'm not going to take that away from them calling it "Luck."

However much it sucked for the USC's fans to watch that game, we were over it come Jan 1st.  Nothing brings your spirits up after a tough loss than a Rose Bowl victory.

Enjoy your win.  You guys earned it, but talking smack about might just end up motivating us more in the end.

Anything can happen in the cross town rivalry.  Over the years the contests at the Rose Bowl have always been close games.  The only blow out being Carson Palmer's last season.
