Miles Backtracks on ESPN

We've talked about Les Miles' comments in regards to USC and the Pac 10 ad nausea. Today on ESPN's College Football Live Miles backed away from those comments. Click on the link that says College Football Live: Speed Drills to see the complete interview.

I have transcribed some quotes:

Rece Davis: Now you were quoted recently that you would Love to get a shot at USC for the national championship. You went on to say that "They're going to play real knockdown drag-outs with UCLA and Washington, Cal-Berkley, Stanford -- some real juggernauts. What led you to make those comments about USC's Schedule?

Les Miles: This...Hey, Hey this is a bad news time that's all there can be I can only tell you that we have great respect for the Pac 10 conference as a whole I can tell that USC has been a great team no matter what anybody says, for years.

Davis Laughing in the Background

and certainly We would love to be in the national championship game and we would play any comer and certainly if that happened to be USC that would be great with us. That's what I was in reference to...I can tell that it was more in the pride in the SEC and understanding the we play a pretty competitive schedule and we finish our season and our conference record with a championship game.

I think the championship game certainly throws another great opponent at a neutral site at the end of the season that maybe makes the hurdle of the SEC even a little higher and a little bit more difficult to finish a season undefeated or in a highly ranked position.

Rece Davis: Now I saw you laugh when I brought up your quotes. Now, obviously they were given at a very pro Tiger function. They gotten some play, a lot of national media you have just gotten some more here, have you talked to Pete Carroll about them?

Les Miles: I would only hope that Pete Carroll is not concerned with any of this conversation, its nothing but speculative so far away from a seasons end and so close to a beginning of a very important schedule for both he and I.

Sounds like ole Les is doing a bit of a back track to me. I still think his original comments were a way of covering his ass if LSU doesn't get to the title game.

God I hope we get to play them...BAD!

Thanks Les
We won't have any trouble getting up for a game against LSU now.  But if history tells us anything, the stupidest thing he is doing with those quotes is talking about the NC game before the season starts.

I was always pleased with how coach Carroll handles these types of questions.  He just says that the BCS is beyond his control, there's nothing that we can do to change it, and that our goal is to go to the Rose Bowl every season.  If we go to the BCS NC game, then great.

Les Miles should worry more about playing Auburn, Alabama, Florida, and Georgia, before he starts putting USC in his comments about future opponents.  If I were a coach on any of those teams, I know I would use Miles' comments to motivate my guys.

Les Miles
is an idiot. Backtracking is exactly what he did, but it was a horrible job at that. How can you tear down a conference by sarcastically grouping Cal with Stanford, then say that you respect the Pac-10 "as a whole". Everyone watching knew this guy's comments weren't going away, and he won't hear the end of this until LSU wins the title in January. Which obviously won't happen.

Were any of you guys surprised to hear Lee Corso pick LSU to win it all? And what an ugly suit Miles was wearing.

BCS stats
Here are the conference appearances in the BCS NC game.  The SEC has the most impressive record at 3-0, with the ACC coming in last at 1-3.  There have been some blowouts, and some close games between the conferences.  All the conference berths seem pretty even with the exception of the Big 12, with Oklahoma, and Florida State getting the most appearances.  What's sad is when the BCS fails, and we get a blowout like Miami-Nebraska, USC-Oklahoma, or Florida-Ohio State.

The Pac-10 isnt getting any special treatment from the BCS.  Just ask Oregon if they agree with that.  Les Miles needs to shut up, and concentrate on the regular season.

ACC: 1-3
Florida State: 1-2
Va Tech: 0-1

Big 10: 1-1
Ohio State: 1-1

Big East: 1-1
Miami: 1-1

Big 12: 2-3
Texas: 1-0
Oklahoma: 1-2
Nebraska: 0-1

Pac 10: 1-1
USC: 1-1

SEC: 3-0
LSU: 1-0
Florida: 1-0
Tennessee: 1-0

The SEC got lucky
Because of Hurricane Georges Tennessee was able to play Florida St instead of UCLA.  The SEC and Pac 10 could easily be tied at 2-1.  And if we had actually won I doubt Toledo's program would have collapsed in the way it did.
