USC Students Organizing Boycott of Coliseum Concessions

Paragon has been covering the brou-ha-ha between USC and the Coliseum Commission as it has taken on new life with USC's agreement with the Rose Bowl to play 2008 home games in Pasadena.

It's safe to say that nobody is particularly thrilled with this impasse. It's hard to understand why the Coliseum Commission can't understand a clear "no" from the NFL and is turning down the opportunity to have USC pay for renovations.

USC, after all, is the oldest tenant of the Coliseum; indeed their agreement to play football there was one of the contributing reasons for the construction of the stadium. It is also appropriate that USC - the main tenant and a private entity - pick up the tab for renovations, rather than holding hostage the taxpayers of Los Angeles or indeed the state of California.

One can only conclude that either the Commission thinks that USC is bluffing, or that they genuinely don't understand what it means to have Coliseum revenue drop off. This seems odd, as at least a couple of the Commission Members appear to have had applicable work experience, which in this case I would define as some P&L responsibility.

The USC Undergraduate Student Government (USG) and Graduate and Professional Student Senate (GPSS) are organizing a boycott of Coliseum concessions this weekend, to give the Coliseum Commission a preview of what it means to lose the concession money. The goal is that all students, alumni, and other fans will join in the effort and spend their money elsewhere.

Paragon quoted Coliseum Commissioner William Chadwick as saying the following:

"I think it would be great if they played at the Rose Bowl for two years [.] At the end of that two years, the leverage we would have in negotiations would be spectacular."

Mr Chadwick apparently thinks that 2 years without USC football revenue is a minor detail for the Coliseum, which is the luxury of not having his job depend on financial results I suppose.

This ongoing debacle is ridiculous - USC and the Coliseum have been joined together since the Coliseum opened. No doubt there's room for negotiation, but the Coliseum Commission is doing the general public a disservice by holding out for an NFL team that isn't going to come.

If the Coliseum Commission doesn't believe that the University is really serious, perhaps their paying customers can give them a preview of what it's like to try and hit their operating costs on monster truck shows and flea markets.

If you're going to the Coliseum this weekend, please consider joining in the boycott.

I am, and I will along with. . . .
. . .as many fans that I can help coax into boycotting the concessions. It will be my first time this season being in Sec. 13- an "arrangement" of some sort, won't get into it here- and I hardly ever "buy" stuff at the Coliseum anyway, so I'll do my best to join in the student solidarity with regards to this matter.

What is the Coliseum Commission smoking? They're either smoking too much, or not enough of it- whatever it is.

What say you, Bruin-fans? If you're attending, are you guys gonna "pause for the cause"?

A tricky question?
Stick it to USC, or do everything in their power to keep USC away from the Rose Bowl? Hmmm.

How about USC helps UCLA get rid of their coach, and UCLA helps lean on the Coliseum Commission to keep us out of the Rose Bowl? Talk about win - win!

Hell yeah DC,
Glad we're on the same team. Talk about leverage? Talk about position of strength? There it is there Paragon. DC is our lead negotiator here at CC I think. At least, he has my vote.

On Board...
You mean I should refrain from buying a $5 watered-down coke (to pour my Crown in) and not purchase the $5 crappy hot dogs this weekend? I think I can live with that (though I'll need an option for my Crown).

Besides, it's all about the bacon-wrapped hot dogs outside the gates before the game and Chano's post-game.

Mmmmmm...chili cheese fries from Chano's.

See you there on Saturday. Fight On!

Political Morons
Read the list of members on the Coliseum Commission, and you will see some of the biggest morons in L.A.  These people have never shown the slightest rational thought in other political matters, and I doubt we're going to see anything here.

The only way to get this done is convince these dumbasses what an inexusable and embarrassing situation it would become for the only university in downtown Los Angeles located across the street from the only stadium in downtown Los Angeles playing football in Pasadena for no other reason than the city won't negotiate a lease.  Students would have to line up within view of an empty Coliseum to get on a bus bound for Pasadena on game day.

Give the politicians some situation that allows them to make it look like they actually won the negotiations.  They don't care about the actual details - just about the bullet point they can put on a political flyer.  It's all impression with these political buffoons.

I will definitely not be spending a dime inside the Coliseum walls this Saturday.

Commission = Ballwashers
It's really, really, REALLY stupid. Hide under the guise of "historical landmark" excuse for not renovating. Gee, did anyone think why LA has no NFL teams?

Quite possibly because they wanted the same things - UPGRADE THE DAMN BUILDING. >.<

Alternative
Guererro has already said that USC can't move to the Rose Bowl permanently.  The question now is, if we are serious about not being at the Coliseum without a favorable lease, and the Rose Bowl is not a long term option, then where else could we play?

Bravo, joe trojan-
What's so funny is, the Home Depot Center was the first thing I thought of as a "more sensible" alternative venue with which our Mighty Trojans could play in when I initially digested the news of this current "USC/Rose Bowl". . . .and then 30-seconds later, I started to quietly chastise myself (sneering facial-expressions included) for considerings such delusions of grandeur. (???)

I know HDC doesn't have proper aesthetically pleasing configurations for a traditional "football pitch", then again- think about it. . . it kinda does. Still entertained? I know, BS! So anyways, think of the cost of a ticket at a limited seating "newer" venue, just down the road a piece in Carson. Yeah, Carson, CA- REALLLL close to Compton, uh huh! I'll give you 2 acronyms (?): 1) IKEA and 2) NWA

How' you like this now? It's a beautiful conflaguration of Kobe and Britney, throw in a Ferrari Enzo, a crazy robbery/bank heist in Burbank, reality TV, and your next door neighbor has "something to do with it all".

It's L.A.

Don't Laugh...
...but I was on google maps earlier looking around SC to see if there was anywhere nearby where you could build a stadium that wouldn't involve having to knock down people's houses. Short  answer: not really.

The only areas that seemed even theoretically possible - but not likely -  were these:

  1. Level the Shrine and shoehorn something into the area bounded by Figueroa,  Jefferson, S University, and W 30th.
  2. The parking lots by the Staples Center and the surrounding low-level commercial buildings looks
Either that, or convert the corner of campus that's Dedeaux field, the practice field, the gym / swim center, etc.

So, I don't know that there really is an obvious nearby alternative to the Coliseum. That would certainly correlate to the University's willingness to drop $100 million into the Coliseum - you'd not get a new stadium for that - certainly not one that was big enough or nearby.

Will someone 2nd this notion?
I think AEG is already having "strong indications" of traipsing along the "let's build a bigass ginormous large-capacity stadium" road right directly across the street from the current Home Depot Center location. Replete with, ADDITIONAL clubhouses with sports training and exercise facilities.

I read it somewhere, sometime not long ago. Was it AEG or the Eli Broad consortium?

Anyone?
