STUD!

Steve Smith single handedly gave the offense what it needed tonight and because of him we got out of Pullman with a win. A win that we really didn't deserve. Smith had 11 catches for 186 yards and 2 TD's. His great play made up for some bad penalties that could hve taken us out of the game. For that effort I would call him a Stud.

That would be Mr. Stud

Thank you Steve for going the extra mile tonight!

and post game interview
Ass-kicker and modest to boot. Nice attempt by the interviewer to get him to cop to a hold, at least Smith didn't fall for it.

I did see that
But iwas so nervous at the end of the game i didn't really think about it until now.

Man he is cool!

Fight On Steve!

not the right attitude
This is not a win that we didn't deserve.  Our guys went out there and fought this one out and notched another win and are still undefeated.

Are we talking about the same game?

No, it wasn't a blow-out, which is what everyone is used to.  It was a close game against a quality opponent, which is what the rest of the college football world deals with on a regular basis.

Once we went up 7-3, we never lost the lead!  How was this a lucky win?

I totally agree Steve is a stud, and I think he's never gotten the attention he deserves.  He should have gotten 1000 passing yards last season instead of Jarrett getting 1200 or whatever it was; the roommates just got all the attention.  The point is he stood up like someone always does, and if he wasn't there, it would have been someone else.

We got the W, earned our win, and remember this:

Booty is 4-0 all time as a starter, which is something Palmer and Leinart never were.

Yes and no
Thats a fair criticism.

Maybe I'm one of the spoiled ones but that was not a pretty win with all the penalties and the -2 turnovers and a couple of bobbled punts.

Maybe it is too harsh. I am not averse to being corrected but you have to admit that you can't be comfortable going into AZ St. not with all the mistakes that were made tonight.

If the Goal is get back to the championship game we didn't earn any points and I would not be surprised if we took a hit in the polls because of our performance and that hurts us in getting back. to the title game.

Too harsh, OK. I was probably a little emotional after the game and I feel better now, but while the outcome was positive the effects may not be and our critics will treat this win as if we didn't deserve it.

maybe not lucky overall
but SC had a couple of breaks go their way. You can't count on that -- to use a cliche from the office, hope is not a strategy.

You're right overall, they are finding a way to win  but if they don't get a little more consistent about finding good matchups, not dropping the ball Patrick Turner, etc., then it could be more problematic against a more talented team with better coaching...

Mind you, having seen the "highlights" of the Oregon - Arizona State game, I am not as worried as I might be.

Yes, but...
if we don't get it fixed now we could have major trouble when we hit the tougher games on our schedule. Again, I agree that a win is a win but ssome will this game as a step back.

I guess that was the point which I was trying to make.

NOTE TO SELF: DON'T GO ONLINE UNTIL AFTER YOU HAVE CALMED DOWN FROM AN EMOTIONAL WIN OR LOSS.

Sun Devils?
I know we have to play every game, but the Arizona State game is not one that worries me. That team shot itself in the foot (if not head) a couple of weeks ago... which is odd only in that Koetter's teams usually get through 2/3 of the season before they do that. I fully expect USC to rout ASU. Cal and Oregon will be much tougher tests.

My Bad
I accidentally looked past the Huskies. But either way I would like to see the problems worked out before the last 4 games where we are sure to be tested.

Good win
Beating Wazzu by 6 on the road will not hurt USC in the polls at all.  Top teams are allowed to play close games and they do it all the time (see:  Auburn 21, South Carolina 14).

I am really tired of the dropped punts and kickoffs, however.  Has there been a game yet in which someone didn't drop a ball that fell right into their gut with no pressure surrounding them?  If the Cougs had gotten possession after that, then I would have been worried.

Not to say that USC could be putting 50 on the board if they wanted to, but I think they are keeping the reins on the offense a little bit.  In a way, I think they are consciously keeping the opponent's at arms length.  I don't think the coaches have ever been concerned with the outcomes in AZ or here, and neither have I.

I think they will slowly put more on the offense with the goal of being able to unleash more of what they have up their sleeve in the last month against the dangerous teams.

I love USC so much that I hate UCLA even more.

Best night ever
Awesome win, followed by a gig where I got to watch Earth Wind and Fire, and met Reggie Young (their trombonist), followed by an awesome wedding with lots of gorgeous women.

USC = heaven.

I'll post my thoughts about the game later today.

Fight on!!! Beat the Cougars!!!

calm down guys
It didn't look pretty. Thats for sure. But we are 4-0 heading home to play Washington. Everyone seems to forget that most teams playing USC is the highlight of their season. They get amped and sometimes they gey lucky too, just like we did.

1) More importantly, Booty made CRITICAL throws on third and fourth downs to move the chains. Slowly, the offensive staff is putting more responsibility on his shoulders. One of those turnovers was an interception to end the half, so don't count that against him. 2) Another thing we took away is the knowledge that Steve Smith will be more relied on in future games. He doesn't drop passes like the overrated Jarret and is a more accurate route runner. 3) The secondary coaches can actually coach the secondary now that they have game film of them getting smoked all day 4) Lastly, the team proved they don't need big plays and flashy Hollywood swagger to win games, such was the 99 yard touchdown drive.

USC is the most talented, well-coached team in the country. They are breaking in new players at key skill positions, unlike Auburn, Ohio State, Michigan, etc.. They might drop in the polls, but trust me, we'll be full steamby the end of the season with an undefeated record.

Booty is clutch
but I wonder if he finds the easy 1st down throws uninteresting? Must be nice to be that talented ; )

Also, don't turn on Jarrett too quickly. He's definitely taken longer than I would have liked to adapt to Leinart leaving (injury notwithstanding), but while he's less precise a route runner than Smith he's more likely to pick up yards because he's very hard to bring down -- remember that touchdown against Texas in the Rose Bowl where he came down with the ball, 2 Texas players came in so hard that one of them ended up with a fractured arm, and Jarrett stayed upright long enough to get into the end zone?

What I like about the Smith plays last night was that it showed that Booty can rely on him for decent pick-ups, that opens things up with Smith and Jarrett on routes.

Now if they can just help Turner get over his case of butterfingers, life will be good. Maybe they should threaten to put him in at tailback?

Great points all around
Once the runnung game gets humming a decent clip things should fall into place. Booty definitely has command of the offence.

There are concerns, but we ARE on the path...
Hey there, I love the site.

I, too, share some of your concern.  I felt like our linebackers maybe read the headlines a little too much this week, and played a little overconfident.  Each guy made big plays, but they were also inconsistent.  And if Pete Carroll wasn't the coach, I'd be very concerned about the secondary.

But... it's also a good thing for this defense to face some adversity.  They now have an end-of-game situation under their belts.  I think that we should look at the remaining schedule as a very positive factor for the team.  After Washington State, we now know what needs to be worked on and the coaches now have four conceivably "tuneup" type games to work out the kinks.  After that... we enter Pete Carroll's patented November stretch of games.

A little too much bravado?
Once again the MSM his touting the defense as world beaters, last time it was the offense. There is no question that they are one of the best units in the country.

This "scare" should bring them back down to earth and get them back into focus. I agree this game showed some flaws that they can now work on. Washington should give us a better game than was first expected so this comes at a good time to work on the details.

Cal Fans are Nerds
Paragon SC,

Want to make sure you see this bit of stat geek lunacy from the official Cal web site: http://california.scout.com/2/574652.html

I also posted a little something about about how idiotic this is: http://displacedtrojan.blogspot.com/2006/10/usc-post-game-cal-fans-are-idiots.html

Take care.

Thanks for link DT
I read it. Too funny. I guess if you look hard enough you can find anything that can bolster your argument that you are better. Cal has shown some improvement since the Tenn. game al beit against some lesser ooponents.

We need to stay on point and wory about our team and take each game as it comes. I think this past weekend gave us a bit of a wake up call,

lets hope we get the most out of it.
