Pat Forde On the Enfield hire

+

USC: Hired Andy Enfield from Florida Gulf Coast after firing Kevin O'Neill during the season. Enfield may be the ultimate Big Dance Flavor of the Month, riding the first-ever Sweet 16 appearance by a No. 15 seed from the Atlantic Sun Conference to a high-paying job in the Pac-12. Consider: FGCU was clinging to a three-point lead with five minutes left against North Florida in the A-Sun quarterfinals – if that game gets away, Dunk City is a myth. We never hear of Andy Enfield. So there is a lot to prove for a guy who has been a head coach for all of two years and has one winning season. But what Enfield lacks in track record, he may make up for in the substance he showed during that NCAA run. USC has been a sucker job for years – everything is in place to succeed, but success rarely follows. It might have the right guy this time. Grade: B.

Whatever respect Lane Kiffin built up last season for guiding the Trojans to a 10-2 record has been whittled away. Kiffin's antics during the season are head-scratching, making things often seem to be a lot harder than they need to be. The Trojans made a month's worth of mistakes in the Desert on Saturday afternoon. This team seems to flop any time it's faced with pressure, and that all goes back to the head coach. Going into the season there was a lot of talk about a certain USC player potentially being the first pick in the draft. After two months of the season, it's clear the Trojans best player is sophomore WR Marqise Lee, not Matt Barkley. Despite the presence of Lee and Robert Woods, the senior QB has had such a shaky 2012 and more mistakes became his and the Trojans undoing in the desert. Barkley has now thrown eight INTs, one more than he had all of last season despite throwing almost 200 fewer passes. And USC still has zero wins over teams with winning records in 2012. Hi all. Notre Dame fan here looking for hotel advice for November. Can anyone give me some suggestions for places to stay that weekend near the Coliseum? Somewhere within a short cab ride or closer would be great. But i'm hoping to find a hotel the isn't too much more than $100/night. i know i can beat that by staying near LAX, but then the cab would be more expensive than renting a car. Any help is appreciated. Thanks!

USC. In case there were any concerns that coaching paranoia and control-freak tendencies had waned, Kiffy is here to assure you that's not the case. He is "not addressing injuries this season," according to the Los Angeles Times, and the school has pulled the credential and practice access for Los Angeles Daily News reporter Scott Wolf after he dared report that kicker Andre Heidari had knee surgery Sunday night. Kiffin instituted a policy in August banning journalists from reporting in-practice injury or strategy news, but the Daily News report did not cite practice-related information. The Times said three sports editors from the Los Angeles area met with USC athletic director Pat Haden Wednesday to discuss the situation, and later Wednesday it was announced that the practice ban was lifted on Wolf. However, discussions about Kiffy's paranoid policy were ongoing. As is his ability to annoy much of the human race. Forde-Yard Dash: Coaching moves shake up college football landscape - Yahoo! If the NCAA were to find that violations occurred before the sanctions were handed down in June 2012, USC would not appear to be subject to "repeat violator" sanctions. Speaking generally, "for a school to be considered a repeat violator, at least one major violation must have occurred within five years after the penalty for the previous case," Osburn said. 2. There is no longer a good theory for the USC case There are certainly plenty of conspiracy theories about why USC received one of the stiffest set of sanctions ever handed down in Division I. Chief among them is after years of not being able to get enough evidence to bring the case against the Trojans, the enforcement staff and the Committee on Infractions had to send a message that they were not going to let USC get away with it. But even if we assume this is true, there still needs to be a more appropriate explanation. The best reasoning had been that ultimately USC was a recruiting case, not an amateurism case. By creating an environment that allowed Reggie Bush and OJ Mayo to receive thousands of dollars of extra benefits, USC got a huge recruiting boost. The message was "come here, you don’t need to worry about those pesky NCAA rules, we don’t mind." If that was the core of the USC case, UCF should have gotten the death penalty. Not only was that the culture created at UCF, but the athletic director was involved as an integral part of creating that culture. Southern California might have had a laissez-faire attitude about who was in the locker room or around recruits, but the evidence that the school was actively promoting the violations was tenuous. No such problem at UCF. Lessons From the UCF Infractions Case | Athletic Scholarships Gee, ya' think? I am shocked I tell ya'...
