"Hollywood's Band" Brings Star Wars & Rock ‘n Roll to Coliseum for Rivalry Game

+

The USC Trojan Marching Band (TMB) will burnish its reputation as "Hollywood’s Band" with special star-studded performances before and at halftime of the annual rivalry game against the UCLA Bruins at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum this Saturday. During the pregame presentation, guitarist Slash will accompany the band for its performance of the national anthem. The rock legend – of Guns N’ Roses fame – will be the first guest artist to join the TMB in the playing of "The Star Spangled Banner." At the half, the TMB will devote a special multimedia performance to Star Wars, the blockbuster film series created by USC alumnus George Lucas. After a video introduction by Luke Skywalker-himself Mark Hamill, the band will perform selections from John Williams’ score to the saga while illustrating characters and events from the series on the field. Scenes from the films will play concurrently on the Coliseum vision board. Spectacular season-ending shows have become a tradition for the Trojan Marching Band. Last year, the band devoted its halftime to Unbroken, the movie celebrating the life of USC alumnus Louis Zamperini. The film’s director Angelina Jolie introduced the show via video. "Due to the success of our Unbroken show last year," says director Dr. Arthur C. Bartner, "We decided to close the season by featuring another movie coming out in December and honor another great Trojan alumnus, GeorgeLucas." Bartner celebrated 45 years with the Trojan Marching Band this season and the program marked its 350th consecutive game supporting USC football at both home and away games, a streak that dates back to 1987. The rivalry game kicks off at 12:30pm and will air on ABC on the West Coast.

Best of the comments section: Oregon fan respects Juju Smith-Schuster

[I'm a] Duck fan Just want to say that Shuster is a warrior. I always cringe when I see guys go down with non-contact injuries, I was sure he tore his ACL. He was clearly playing at somewhere around 60% out there, that takes a ton of heart.

Best of the Comments Section - Why USC Should release Clay Helton

+

I think that Clay Helton is a good man and I genuinely believe that he has been doing the right thing by the players in terms of the tone that he sets. I would be surprised if he remained at the helm on a permanent basis, for a variety of reasons. The reason that matters most to me is that he’s been part of the coaching staff that has players who struggle with the basics. Someone with better football acumen than me would have to weigh in on whether or not this is true, but I see a team of talented young players who have plenty of heart but look like they’re skipping over the fundamentals in practice because the assumption is that they’ve got it already. The fact that the (short-lived) improvement on defense prior to yesterday came after Wilcox flat-out said that they had stopped talking scheme all the time and gone back to basics almost blew my mind: I can’t think of a better way to talk yourself out of a job, if that’s been the pervasive culture. (And yes, I know the middle linebackers were all injured and that makes a big difference, but that big a difference?) It’s been a bit depressing to see well coached Group of Five teams and think, damn, those kids are getting more results as a team than you might expect on paper, and it’s because they’re consistent. We hear a lot about how talented SC players are, and I see both players who are already effective and who have a lot of potential, and I wonder how much more they could get out of their play if they had coaches who were able to set an approach, and help the players be consistent so that they could really take advantage of their natural talents. I could be wrong about all of that, but it seems like it’s a consistent thread between the Kiffin era and the Sarkisian era. I’d like to see a new coaching staff who can give the players the structure to succeed, because whatever they have now, that’s not it.

Best of the Comments Section - Start Browne?

+

If USC doesn’t win the conference and play in the Rose Bowl, I say start Browne in the bowl game. Might as well get some meaningful reps in before next season’s opener against Alabama.

Best of the Comments Section - Skipping a Bowl game?

+

There probably will be a bowl game… a reward for the players, the instituional money, the competition, and the chance for the coaches to get extra time with the players. The latter presumably in preparation for next year. But here’s the rub… there might not be a next year… for the coaching staff that is. Sadly but realistically, I personally don’t see the Trojans winning next week. They’re simply not deep enough and too banged up. An already suspect defense is even more so given some of this year’s best players are now on the bench. The ‘O’ line’s a mess for the same reason and on and on. So, why play a bowl game and risk another injury that DOES NOT go away by next fall? Wouldn’t an immediate emphasis on 1) finding/hiring the "RIGHT" new guy and 2) recruiting for next year be more beneficial and productive? Signing day is now just a few weeks away. Given this tumultuous season, USC football is light years away from what it can and should be. Sure, SC could pull it out next week making all the above moot. Mmmmaybe…. and I hope… but…. yeah. Meantime, I would think that SC’s focus should be on rebuilding the program in ALL its dimensions as opposed to securing a ‘so what mid-day mid-week mid-continent’ bowl bid only to regurgitate the very mediocrity we’d all like to see vastly improved if not eliminated outright. Like the late George Allen used to say: "This future is now."
