Dark Horses

I curious as to the dark horses you guys have in your brackets. The only dark horse I have in the tournament is USC (hence the reason for the post).

I have them beating Arkansas, Texas, and Marquette, whereupon they will be crushed by Georgetown. I actually had to convince a few of my SC friends that you guys will do that well. They changed their brackets accordingly.

So I don't get my ass kicked for screwing with some Trojans' brackets, make sure you cheer your team on to the Elite Eight, okay?

Beat Texas??
Your lips to gods ears.

That will be a tough task. Guarding Durant could be a two-man job leaving Augustin open to score at will.

Do we have a chance sure about as much chance as UCLA beating us...

OK, so I guess we have a chance, cool! ;-)

Huge stretch...
to say Marquette will beat UNC and SC will beat Texas.  I haven't seen a single credible SC fan predict the team going to Elite Eight.

Well
Maybe that just makes all the SC fans you've talked to really bad fans.

(I had a whole analysis written up on why I think I'm right but it's pretty pointless when it comes to March Madness. Crazy shit happens in the tournament. I expect USC to be the one team to do some unexpected, crazy shit. You don't have to believe me. I'm not asking you to. But if I win my pool I will be laughing to the bank knowing that AO probably didn't win his)

I would post that analysis
I am interested in your thoughts.

I think its safe to say that a lot of SC fans, while excited at their spot in the tournament- I think #5 is a bit generous, are a little leery at how they will perform SC has had some spotty games this year.

I agree about dark horses but losing to ASU late in the season stung more than the loss at UW who were unbeatable at home.

So I would ask again please post your analysis, an objective outsiders point of view would be good to read.

You never know
Considering we have been to the elite eight 1 time, I dont think being realistic necessarily makes you a  bad fan. I think most SC fans would be completely satisfied with a Sweet 16 appearance.

Personally I think we have the ability to make a run if the team plays their best ball every night.  However, inconsistancy in our play has been evident throughout this past season.  We will see which SC team shows up on Friday.

Who knows... will all these PAC-10 teams in the tournament this year, we might even have an all PAC-10 Final Four.

A run would be great
Though I would be happy with a sweet sixteen.

Texas ... tough
Well, I definitely have SC moving past Arkansas ... and put a hefty bet by proxy to do so.

But that Texas game.  My feeling is you boys should come out on top based on two things:

  1. The Pac was a bitch of a conference, and you had to play the best every time
  2. I just don't respect Big 12 hoops.
That and being a Pac 10 homer I have all the teams moving to the 16.

Good luck, guys!

Dark Trojan horses
I have USC losing to Texas in the 2nd round, but I think it will be very close and I don't think it would be much of an upset to see 'SC knock off the Longhorns. Obviously, Durant is a stud and would put up sick numbers, but people seem to be forgetting that Texas has a freshman point guard (a very good one, but a freshman nevertheless), whereas USC has good, experienced guards and Gibson seems to have overcome the mini-slump he was in. I haven't examined Texas too closely, but they seem like a good offensive team and a not-so-good defensive team (Durant is certainly not gathering accolades for his incredible defense) and USC has a serious advantage defensively, as long as Gibson stays out of foul trouble. Forget the Oregon game, USC was a good team this year and can win some games.

Well there goes...
Marquette.  I hope money wasn't involved in this bracket challenge cause your chances just took a big hit.

Luckily I faded Marquette and went with Michigan State ;).

Bracket...
officially busted. I only do one no multiple sheets for me.

Glad everyone had Duke
I went 14-2 yesterday on my bracket.  Here's hoping today goes as well.

Hey AO
I've got every single game right so far except the Marquette-MSU game. So far, I'm doing great, but I don't know what that means for my Eastern bracket.

Besides that, I even got VCU beating Duke. How's everyone else faring?

Per Paragon's Request
Here is my analysis on why USC can make it to the elite 8 -
  1. First and foremost, the loss to ASU was irrelevant. This isn't football. Not every loss means something. ASU had lost 17 straight games (I think) and were bound to win a game. They hung with UCLA for the longest time. I even think their average margin for losses was around 5 points. It's not like they were getting blown out. Thus, it really comes down to the fact that they were due for a win and USC got the unlucky draw. That's it.
  2. USC plays in the Pac-10, arguably the best conference in the nation (depending on how you view the ACC). 7 losses while playing in the Pac-10 is pretty great.
  3. USC plays sound defense. At one point, USC's defense was considered better than UCLA's (not too sure if that still is the case). This is one of the main reasons I think you can beat Texas.
  4. Texas has Durant. That's fine, but why are they a 4 seed? It's probably because Texas is a one man show. Shut down Durant and Texas is pretty mediocre. Shut down the other 4 guys and Durant can't carry the team. I liken it to Adam Morrison last year on Gonzaga. He was killing UCLA during the Sweet 16 but he alone couldn't keep a whole UCLA team from storming back. He needed help (even though he was arguably the best player in the nation) and didn't get it. I foresee the same with Texas and Durant.
  5. Athleticism. USC is very athletic, even more so than UCLA. I think you can exploit your own athleticism much more during the tournament. I'm not too sure why this is the case, but it is the reason why some analysts think Arizona has a shot against Florida if they past the first round. I concur. Gabe and Nick are extremely athletic and I'm willing to bet that will be a HUGE asset.
  6. I am suffering from that scientific phenomena called "that funny feeling" that USC will do well.
There you have it. You can agree and disagree all you want. There are 18,446,744,073,709,551,616 ways to fill out a NCAA bracket, so we will all be wrong at some point.

Got a good feeling
I like our chances against Texas.  And, yep, ASU doesn't mean much.  They are probably the best team with that in conference record around.  Just lost a bunch of close games.
