USC football target Charles Nelson is set to come across the country leaving the Sunshine State for the West Coast, but instead of becoming a Trojan, Nelson signed with Pac-12 rival Oregon Wednesday morning.
It's finalized. I'm officially a duck.— charles nelson (@ChuckTooraw) February 5, 2014
The Trojans were high on the playmaking athlete, and made a lot of ground after the hiring of Steve Sarkisian, but couldn't close the deal. Nelson made an official visit to USC on January 17, but a week later visited Oregon and committed with the Ducks shortly after.
Nelson is a shifty runner that played running back for Seabreeze, but at 5'9", 164 pounds, he will likely fit into the De'Anthony Thomas mold as a slot receiver/running back in the Ducks' spread option. He has elite speed that has been clocked in the 4.3s and his shiftiness could make him another dangerous big-play threat for Mark Helfrich.
Charles Nelson was listed as an athlete by three of the recruiting services and as a running back by Scout. Though he is a unanimous three-star prospect, Scout ranks him most highly, placing him just outside of the its top 100 with a national rank of No. 101.
ESPN, which often tries to consider college position when assessing its rankings, does not have him in its ESPN300, but does grade him out with a 79 scout grade. He comes in at No. 476 in 247Sports composite rankings.
Notre Dame also received an official visit from Charles Nelson in December. You can check out his highlights on Hudl here.
