I swear, I am not here to troll the USC fans. But I been reading and hearing some of the rumored coaches that are candidate for the USC job and I have to say; sure why not.
But first, you have to give it to Bobby Boucher, I mean, Ed Orgeron. Say what you want about the dude, when the history books are all done with, there will be Ed's name as the head coach of USC Trojans. Sure he backed into the job, but hey, here is a guy that was out of football and living with his parents not that terribly long ago. He had some demons to battle and he did, and here he is coaching the Trojans.
Now, onto the rumor mill. Can we stop with the Jon Gruden rumors already? He is not coaching any college football team, none, not until he is like 60 and pulls a Bill Walsh. And Jeff Fisher? Really? Fisher is going to leave the NFL to coach the Trojans? Okay, sure, why not. But hey, why not go for Bill Belichick while you are at it, I bet he could also bring along Bill O'Brien as his OC and Saban as the DC. Then there is the Chip Kelly talk, I mean really? Why not get some scientist to reanimate Vince Lombardi, and the aforementioned Bill Walsh too.
I'm not saying, get ready for your next head coach to the Rainbow Warriors DC, you guys will get a good coach no doubt. But you are overvaluing the job a little too much.
Think about this, you guys got Pete Carroll, he is a one of a kind of fella. He embraces the Hollywood glamor. He was cool with Will Farrell showing up in speedos and a spider-man mask to amused the team. He didn't care if Snoop Dog rolled a fatty while watching practice, that was Pete, and still is. But lets travel back a bit. When Pete was first hired as the USC coach it wasn't with a lot of fanfare. Pete was considered a failure as an NFL coach. There weren't a ton of places knocking at his door.
There are drawbacks to coaching in USC. We all agree Hollywood Pete is a rare bird. But think of all the really great coaches in the NFL and College Football. How many of those guys do you think want to embrace the distraction of Hollywood and LA? Do you think Saban would allow Farrell to run around pranking the team? And yeah, Gruden is all fun on T.V. and he will say "X splits the banana Z formation times five". But do you remember when he was a coach, what was his nickname? CHUCKY, he was nicknamed after a murdering doll because of the scowl on his face. Part of the reason he left the Raiders was cause he didn't care for the distractions in the team. You are a young coach with a young family. You can live in a nice peaceful town or L.A.? No offense but I think a great deal of coaches would rather keep their family in say, Louisville, or Boise. Add the fact that a million dollars don't travel nearly as far in California as they do in say, Tallahassee.
In the end the job is too good to not get a good coach, but please temper your expectations a bit.
