For a few days, Mark Sanchez has silenced his critics.
In the first game of the New York Jets' Sanchez-Tebow era, Sanchez threw for 266 yards with 3 TDs and one INT, leading NY to a 48-28 victory over the Buffalo Bills. Tebow threw no passes and only ran 11 yards on five carries. He even got boos from the hometown crowd when he failed to gain any yards on a direct snap.
We will see if Sanchez can keep the call for dismissal at bay against a tougher opponent next week when they face the Steelers.
Now the news:
Women's Volleyball: The Women of Troy extended their undefeated record to 9-0 with victories over San Diego, Cal Poly, and Notre Dame in the USC Classic Tournament. They were forced to go the distance against the #17 ranked Toreros, but pulled out the five-set win thanks to double-digit kill performances from outside hitters Sara Shaw, Katie Fuller, and Samantha Bricio. They then swept the Mustangs and Irish, with the highlight of the weekend being the first set against ND. The Irish held set point with a 24-22 score, but USC fired off four consecutive points to come back and take the set.
USC is now ranked #3 in the nation behind Nebraska and UCLA. Next weekend, they will head down to Texas for their final preseason tournament, the TCU Molten Invitational. Games against TCU, Lehigh, and Prairie View A&M are on tap. After that, Pac-12 play will begin with a highly anticipated match against the NCAA champion Bruins.
Women's Soccer: Trojan Futbol took its first draw of the season against CSUN on Sunday. The Matadors scored first in the 72ndminute, but USC struck back with a 15 yard shot from Samantha Johnson, who scored her second goal of the season. USC had most of the momentum in the match, with 9 corner kicks and 24 shots on goal, but CSUN keeper Cynthia Jacobo kept the Trojans from claiming the victory with 15 saves. USC finishes non-conference play this weekend with a road game against San Diego and a home game against Portland.
Men's Water Polo: In their first game of the season at McDonald's Swim Stadium, the Trojans claimed another big victory against Cal Baptist, winning by a score of 13-4. Nikola Vavic and Matt Burton led the way with a combined seven goals, and keeper Ely Bonilla made eight saves. The Water Polo team will travel up to Stanford with the football team this weekend to take part in the NorCal Tournament, a preseason tourney they won last year.
Women's Cross Country: The fledgling WCC team looks to improve in 2012 after finishing in last place at the Pac-12 Championships last year. In their first race of the year, the UC Irvine 5K invitational, USC finished in second place with 92 points. Sophomore Erica Capellino set a personal record of 17:43.9, good for eighth overall. It is the first time she has finished a 5K race in less than 18 minutes. Freshmen Jenna Tong and Nicole Davies also set PR times under 18:30. #11 ranked Arkansas won the meet with a perfect score of 15. USC travels to San Diego for the Aztec Invitational this weekend.
Non-conference matches are winding down for the Trojans, and the Pac-12 and MPSF conference foes draw near...
FIGHT ON!
