Sad news from campus: two graduate students, Ying Wu and Ming Qu, were killed about a mile from campus in what appears to have been a carjacking that went from bad to unimaginably worse. Perhaps unsurprisingly, the presence of prospective students taking tours on campus got the LATimes some quotes along the lines of "oh no, the school is in the ghetto, maybe I don't want to go here" which if anything is reductive about the shock in the university community for which this level of violence is atypical. I'm sure everyone who reads this will join me in sending condolences to the families and friends of the victims.
