Let's begin with the man himself, Matt Barkley, who was named yesterday as one of the 16 semifinalists for the 2012 Davey O' Brien Award. He is one of two Pac-12 QBs named to the short list, along with Oregon's Marcus Mariota. The Big 12 lead the way with five semifinalists, including Collin Klein, Landry Jones, and Geno Smith.

This is the third time Barkley has become a semifinalist for the award. The three finalists will be named on Nov. 19. You can take part in the award's fan vote HERE.

During the game, Barkley and Robert Woods were treated to special video packages from L.A. sports greats congratulating them on their new records. The videos included Chris Paul, Blake Griffin, Luc Robitaille, Carson Palmer, Matt Leinart, Landon Donovan, and Keyshawn Johnson, who told Woods that his new record made him "just a little bit better than me."

Now the news...

Women's Soccer: It seemed that Trojan Futbol was ready to get back on track when they defeated Utah on Friday. In their first home game in almost a month, the Women of Troy edged out the Utes in a fast-paced game. The lone goal in the game came in the 33rd minute from junior Jordan Mirada, who took a perfect cross from Elizabeth Eddy to knock it into the back of the net. For the remainder of the game, the Utes came hard and were within inches of tying up the game, but hard-nosed defense by the USC back line and goalkeeper Caroline Stanley saved the game. It was Mirada's fourth goal of the season.

But the good times were not to last, as they were defeated by Colorado 1-0 in yet ANOTHER overtime crusher. The Buffaloes, who had yet to win a Pac-12 game before this one, held USC to a scoreless regulation before CU senior midfielder Amy Barczuk received a cross pass that she fired into the net in the 105th minute to get the golden goal and send USC out of the weekend with a 5-8-3 record. The Trojans are now 2-4-2 against conference opponents and 1-3-3 in overtime games.

Unfortunately for USC, things are only going to get much, much harder, as the last three games of the season will be home games against the top three teams in the Pac-12, all of whom are nationally ranked. First up are the top-ranked defending national champion Stanford Cardinal, who will play USC in a special game in the Coliseum on Friday night. USC is holding a special promotion and are trying to get over 3,000 in the Coliseum for the game. USC then returns to McAlister Field to play #21 Cal on Sunday, and then the season finale on November 2 against #2 UCLA.

Women's Volleyball: The seventh-ranked Women's Volleyball team had a much better time this weekend as they swept the Utes and Buffs at Galen Center and earned the program's 900th all-time win. Samantha Bricio was an assassin from the serve line, knocking down eleven aces in the two games. The team is now 19-3 and will play the Huskies and Cougars at home this weekend.

During the Utah game, alumni from the women's volleyball team honored longtime athletic trainer Sue Lerner, who recently retired after 34 years of service at Heritage Hall.

Men's Water Polo: USC remained undefeated at 17-0 with a victory over Long Beach State by a score of 13-7. USC started the game with a 5-0 run, and sophomore Kostas Genidounias was the top scorer with five goals in the game. This weekend, the Trojans will be very busy, as they play UC Irvine on the road on Thursday. They will then return home for the first time in a month to play a Saturday doubleheader against Pacific and Cal Lutheran.

Women's Cross Country: The WCC reserve team finished fifth at the 2012 Titan Invitational in Fullerton. Sophomore Erin Matranga was the top finisher, coming in 26th with a time of 18:39.8. San Diego State won the meet with 52 points. USC had 142.

On Saturday, USC will see just how much they have improved this season when they take part in the Pac-12 Championships in Santa Clarita. The race will be a 6 KM run and will feature SIX nationally ranked teams: Oregon, Washington, Stanford, Arizona, Colorado, and UCLA. USC finished dead last at the conference meet last season, but with a meet win earlier in the season, there's reason for the Women of Troy to believe.

Also, the Stanley Cup made an appearance at USC over the weekend. It was placed in front of the Coliseum for fans to take a picture with and was lifted by Luc Robitaille in front of the crowd during a timeout. Robitaille also presented Pat Haden with a personalized LA Kings jersey with his number on it! Now if only they had brought Bailey around to plant the sword on the field.
