There are only a few schools in the entire country that draw fans to the women's sports.

If they want the place to be a better atmosphere, then they should not play in such a massive venue.

At USC we're not snobs, we're just better than you.

On any given night

Students are busy at one or another club meeting, tending to business at their frat or sorority, working a job to earn some money, or just studying in their dorm or at one of the libraries. Bottom line is USC is not an easy school anymore and most students don’t have that much leisure time.

Poor marketing

Low fan turnout is merely a symptom.

Andie Hagemann is justly pointing out the reality.

As someone who goes to both M & W events at Galen, none have been particularly well attended. As far as the recent SC-ucla MBB is was far from ‘nearly full’ only the student section was ‘fuller’ than other games. The Galen was maybe 3/4s full, maybe. There were many bRuins fans – who were for once not particular loud.

The W Volleyball games were better attended than either the WBB or MVB thus far this year. And MVB seems lower than last year, but there has only been 5 or so home matches.

It should be ‘easier’ for students to come and support the teams because just the number of hours it takes is much less because of the location of Galen and none of the pre-game all day consuming activities, if nothing else. For VB & WMBB all one needs is a fuller lower tier to make a difference – because there are times it happens completely different atmosphere ensures. It is not like filling up the Coliseum there are plenty of students to ’spread around’ and more students live around the campus than in previous decades.

I do think marketing is part of it though and scheduling of WBB & MBB games vary by day and time of day presumably for some TV coverage. But even when I was in school I did not really consider the "other" sporting events very often. So I would say the situation is nothing new.

This year in the games I have seen I see remarkable improvement in the WBB’s play and skill level. I have complained previously about it being almost painful to watch, not this years and much of that has to be improvement has to be the coaching.

Andie Hagemann is justly pointing out the reality. It is not just students that might want to show more support but also other Trojan fans.

I never went to Lyons. I have to say Galen id fine for me and many of the matches for WVB have nearly 1.5-3K and seems better attended than MVB. It may be in part because of the fall schedule and the hype about FB which seems to help not hurt attendance.

As someone coming down to SC to go to Galen there is a parking advantage at Figueroa & Jefferson — street parking is more readily available. I have a Galen parking pass which I only use when need be.

I think the other comments here are right on – the marketing is an issue. The focus is FB only.

Back in the day ...

The early 80’s (I am dating myself), I felt the non-revenue sports were by-and-large well attended. Back when Cheryl Miller and the McGee twins were on campus, women’s B-Ball always out-drew the men. Men’s volleyball did well also. But also, back then, even though football was king, there was a emphasis to alert students to other sports and teams.

But DFW has a point. Some of it is a result of poor marketing, not just giving financial incentives, but making sure the students know what is going on and when.

The “Football Uber Alles” mentality under Garrett certainly did not help.

And note that schools all over are seeing student attendance decline. The Duke student section no longer sells out every game at Cameron. I suspect this part of the reason is the over saturation of televised sports.

Yeah, in my day of the late 80s

it was difficult to even find out about events. The DT didn’t prominently display events and students wouldn’t pick up a DT every day.

They should do a better job of promoting these days w/ social media, but they don’t appear to be. They should be blasting it on Twitter and sending a daily events text.

I have been on other campuses, notably Texas A&M, that did a wonderful of promoting. At TAMU, there are freshly painted billboards every day at major traffic points on campus announcing that days events and related promotions. Of course, there are also fewer entertainment options in College Station, but the entire campus always knew exactly what was going on and where.

Do students still leave campus on Thursday?

If 25 or 30 percent of students are leaving campus and DTLA on Thursdays for the weekend, then you are going to have a challenge with student attendence.

Some do but way way less than in the past.

I feel the main problem with students is awareness

More pep rallies with all the fixings so the starving students would help, but to get free eats you have to show up with the previous games ticket. Even at ucla they have had problems with attendance in the Sam gilbert BB team games lately, which isn’t even getting the 27-40 crowd anymore. Lets face it it’s a different era and the 35ers are more app to play Video games than drive to an evening ball game, heck even restaurants are suffering all over LA and OC.

Yes we can't play in a Bowl and that is lucky for the rest of College FB' but next year we at USC will dominate.
