poor Parks...

There is a certain irony that USC alum Bernard Parks does ‘like’ the lease arrangements while UCLA alum Zev Yaroslavsky faces the reality of it in a positive light. I don’t think many on the Coliseum Commission or the LA City Council takes Parks seriously. Having the Coliseum operated by the University just reduces his presence in the Community and USC has better track record in the community relations and impact than he does. He is part of the old school fearing the institution that helps to stabilize the area

Did you mean to say, 'doesn't' like??

Parks is a double dipping fool.

Parks is a buffoon

I read through the agreement last night, and the commission stil has all kinds of power:

  • USC is obligated to give the commission 8 dates between December and July (non-football season) every year at cost. That’s more than they use it now.
  • USC is obligated to support an NFL team for up to 4 years if the city actually ever brings one in.
  • USC is obligated to make the Coliseum available for any future Olympics.
  • USC can’t demolish the sign on the 110 unless the commission agrees.
  • The commission gets a say in what inductees go into the Court of Honor.
  • The commission gets to approve any changes to the exterior of the stadium.

Maybe Parks problem is that the commission gets only 90 free tickets per event which is half of what they get now. Exactly why they get any free tickets at all when they essentially do nothing makes no sense to me, but I suppose getting free crap for no effort is what Los Angeles politics are all about.

A couple of other interesting parts of the agreement:

  • USC has the right (but not the obligation) to demolish the Sports Arena. Obviously, that’s the plan or it wouldn’t be explicitly called out. Can’t wait to see that dinosaur go.
  • USC retains all naming rights but must include “Memorial Coliseum” in any new name. They can change the signage but have to retain the Olympic rings and the letters under the torch as long as the name is the same. Permanent USC related logos are permitted on the stadium.

Honestly, none of those points bother me

The 8 dates are fine so long as the commission pays for the event and repairs the field afterwards (fans lit fires on the field at LA Rising, and the grass wasn’t ready for the first game of the season).

The NFL team issue shouldn’t be too bad so long as Farmer’s stadium gets built. Using the Coli for the Olympics would be awesome IMO. I don’t know which sign we’re referring to either. I also don’t know what the Court of Honor is, and frankly like the look of the Coli from the outside.

“Memorial Coliseum” is iconic. I wouldn’t want the boys to ever call somewhere else home.

Thanks for the summation. It’s really helpful.

Fight On! Beat everybody but us!

Where was the full agreement posted - ??

Sounds balanced from your synopsis.

Maybe Parks will be in the Dinosaur Hall when it goes down.

Full agreement

Entire document is here

The agreement states that the commision is responsible for paying for USC expenses for their events. So no cost to USC but no profit either. It states second week in December to July 5 so they obviously want to reserve a July 4 event.

The sign is the old red. white, and blue marquee on the east side of the 110. It’s ugly as hell, so I would hope that we’ll at least refurbish it.

The Court of Honor is the area under the peristyle with the plaques of notable sports figures from Los Angeles. Little known fact is that there is a plaque of Wooden on ther,e which seems a bit ironic given the setting. I think the commission wants to make sure that we don’t just reserve that for USC figures. Fair enough. I agree with them.

I don’t see USC changing the name too significantly either. I hope we don’t end up with something awful like FedEx Memorial Coliseum. I actually hope they don’t change it at all. Keep the name the same and throw a Trojan head above the Olympic rings.

Don't you think we would pursue a corporate sponsorship for naming rights?

I like USC Memorial Coliseum.

We'd have to pay for it

It actually states that if we do name it something like USC Memorial Coliseum, then we owe for the fair market value of the naming rights. Basically, USC can choose to claim the name but has to pay for it just like any other company.

The agreement also explicitly states that USC has rights to name all components such as the peristyle, field, locker room, etc, etc.

I say DON'T RENAME IT!

it’s a golden opportunity for retribution. Just put a permanent USC logo over the existing Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum sign. That’s it!

Henceforth it will be THE:

USC LOS ANGELES MEMORIAL COLISEUM

thanks for the link....

It is pretty clear from the write-up the Sports Arenas days are number….’maintained to current standards’ in stark contrast that the Coliseum is be maintained in condition similar to the USC campus – which is much better than the current level of maintenance at the Coliseum. I think the ‘pre-approved redevelopment uses’ for the site is a sign that there are already some thoughts be giving to it in a serious way.

I remember when the sign along the Harbor Fwy (110) went in. It looked dated from day one and I don’t think it has even been painted. They should work together to replace it with something more emblematic of the Coliseum rather than faux-Jetsons sign. The sign could be a good tie-in for all the Figueroa Corridor venues -- the one by Galen is lost when heading north on the 110.

As far as a minimum of 8 ‘public use’ events…. I think that keeps it basically as it is. The little blip about the use of the Galen for ‘public use’ if the Sports Arena is demolished is already in affect. The City BB championship has been held at Galen for the last few years, I think.

Don't forget the Hospitality Tent for the Commission Hogs

and the Sports Arena should have been demolished 30 years ago

I read an article in the time last week talking about how they messed up in being dooped by the cat running the place.

he was giving himself raises and bonuses all on made up stuff

Yes we can't play in a Bowl and that is lucky for the rest of College FB' but next year we at USC will dominate.

Parks went to USC?

That’s rich!

Totally off-topic, but kinda relevant: did you guys know that 3 USC alums are in the running to bid for becoming new owners of the Dodgers?

Quick, take a guess how many fUcla/Uclol (your pick) alums are in the running?

Fucking, Bruins. . . . .?

As for Bernard C.? I might make enemies with this statement, but he’s the perfect example of affirmative-action at work. You tell me how he got the Chief position? He’s a decent politician for his constituency, but he’s a terrible man for the community of Los Angeles as a whole. He’s a “my-fair-share” kinda guy in an economy that can ill-afford preferences and perks. He’ll look out for his own and leave whatever’s left over to find amongst themselves. He doesn’t have the future generations of citizens of LA in mind at all. He is in the present, but what’s so sad is that he can’t figure out that he can’t take whatever it is he wants to win with him to his grave. Politicians like him have to change, or they’ll be occupy’ed the fuck out.

Corporate Naming Rights Must Die!

It must ALWAYS be the Memorial Coliseum . . . someone stop the corporate naming madness, please. We just went from Qwest Field to CenturyLink Field . . . it all SUCKS. We the people paid for the damn stadium – and are still paying for it – with the freaking special little invisible taxes the legislature invented so Paul Allen only had to pony up 50 million while we paid the other 500 million. Tell me what I’m getting out of my investment Paul? Tell me why you need Qwest slash CenturyLink’s 60 million bucks? Is it because you’re addicted to cash like a whore?

And by the way, our CenturyLink Field was built with our tax dollars after we voted a resounding NO on the stadium public funding initiative. Paul Allen just laughed at us puny voters, made a trip to the state legislature, and amazingly a law was passed anyway.

F*&* corporate naming rights.

For what it's worth

That’s a fine and beautiful field. The stadium, at night- looks majestic.

Well, here’s where I stand: Seattle is one of the most beautiful cities I’ve ever been to- and I’ve traveled near and far. The exceptions being mainland China and Antarctica that I have travelled extensively.

ps: my dad has been a resident of Friday Harbor for 23 years- I used to fly into SeaTac, but now that he’s become a pilot we go into Bellingham.

Nice. State. Yo!

Basically agree on naming rights...

It just becomes confusing with all the name changes….. without "where" it is at least.

My biggest gripe is that they end up subsidizing facilities that have amenities to support "free enterprises" that are not necessary for the Sport. They over the top and are really to sooth the ego of owners and businesses. Meanwhile the real fans are excluded completely or rarely there because of price.
