Was Saturday nights game an anomaly or the shape of things to come?
I want to think that it's just one game.
But we have seen enough so far this season that shows us that there are some issues. I can live with a bad Barkley performance. It happens, No player is on 100% of the time.
We have some depth and experience issues as well...that's no secret.
I am concerned that is team is still slow to make changes...or progress. Some of that is on the staff, some of it is on the personnel.
I agree with many that say that this team is still young, but Kiffin is all over the place with player management. The RB position comes to mind. He is totally inconsistent. Time management is another issue discussed repeatedly here.
Lane can't be afraid to bench a player even if the replacement isn't as good. Lane has to find a way to keep his players motivated even in the place of making a mistake
Monte Kiffin continue to hold onto his defense. You are only as good as your personnel. I just don't understand why kiffin doesn't fit the scheme to the talent instead of pidgeon holing the talent to the scheme. USC just doesn't have the personnel to run his scheme effectively...teams continue to exploit our soft zones. Monte doesn't account for just about every team throwing the screen in the flat for 5-6 yards per play. We continue to get torched on that play.
Monte had the road map to beat ASU if he looked at the their loss to Illinois but he didn't go to school on it.There is no question that Monte is a defensive guru but let's take it easy...he only has one championship under his belt, he isn't Belichick. Sorry if that sounds harsh.
Our current defense looks very pedestrian and easily exposed.
This isn't new, we saw this at times with Pete Carroll's defenses, the only difference was the personnel. Without the Ellisions', Matthews' Cushing's or Maualuga's, etc out there this teams ability to to defend certain plays or schemes will always be suspect.
I just don't think Monte is suited for the college game.
As for the offense...
There is a difference between Barkley the junior and Sanchez the junior.
I was surprised at some of Barkley's missed opportunities...The over-throw to Woods that was a sure TD and the throw to Woods in the end zone that was tipped at the last second. That throw didn't look crisp and might have been a little late. The under thrown pass to Telfer was another head scratcher, that would have gone for a huge gain.
Even if there is drop off of talent during the game Lane still needs to rotate guys in...not matter what the result. With no post season play this year now is the perfect time to get guys in and get them some experience.
I have read many comments that Kiffin is great as an OC, but as the complete package as the HC is another matter.
This may be a sign of his insecurity.
I don't have the answers here, but I see a number of things that many also see and things just looked like they're going in a million different directions.
All that aside, how this team responds this Saturday against Arizona will paint a much clearer picture than my observations and ramblings...
