Why the Dorrell hate?

Dorrell 3 games into his 4th year was 24-16.
Neuheisel 3 games into his 4th year is now 16-24.

The bruins hated Dorrell’s quiet demeanor. He wasn’t a very good coach, but he was never the disaster that Neuheisel has become. Calling Neuheisel “Dorellian” is an insult to Dorrell. I wonder if the bruins had a choice between having Neuheisel over the last 4 years, or 4 more years of Dorrell, what they would choose. Neuheisel brought hope back, but he clearly hasn’t delivered on any of his promised improvement of their football program.

Rec'd Loco; Suggestion for a Bar Chart

Since we are facing the sad end of a glorious era in Westwood, I suggest that we launch a Weasel tracker – a simple bar chart comparing the Weasel’s W/L record with Dorrell’s over the same # of games. That data is simply too rich to not review daily as a reminder of the dominant monopoly that Rick created in Westwood.

That would put the truth out in all its graphic glory

Isn’t it funny that Rick’s legacy was to destroy the foundations Dorrell built.

BN"s entire raison d'être is hating USC.

Their frantic irrationality on Dorrell is still based on the impossible standard created by Pete Carrol, and the canard they sold about Dorrell being incapable of learning or improving with age and experience. Stupid Ruins, they always eat their own. Good luck Skippy.

Ironic from Plaschke considering he wrote Westwood Ho

saying among other things LA was a Bruin town and aways will be. The guy is an idiot. That said, it’s too soon to dig Ricks grave. Not that I don’t think he is a bad coach, he is, and I’ve said since the day he was hire he would leave UCLA in worse shape than Dorrell. However UCLA was expected to lose to Texas and wasn’t favored against Houston. The likely start was always 1-2, and he still only needs six wins to get another year. With teams like Wazzu, Oregon State, Colorado, Utah and Arizona on the schedule, he might still make it.

by ev on Sep 18, 2011 12:03 PM PDT reply actions

I don't see 5 more wins there

CU is improving, Utah is not slouch, UofA has some great wide receivers…Wazzu + Oregon state put them at 3. I don’t see 3 more wins on the schedule though. Cal? CU?

That would put them at 5. And even those are questionable.

Fight On! Beat everybody but us!

by USCLink on Sep 18, 2011 2:29 PM PDT up reply actions

Well it's not like Rick can't find a loss when he doesn't want too

UCLA will upset a team or two, just as they will get upset. UCLA has talent, what they lack of coaching. If Rick can’t find wins, he will get fired. It would be sad to see him go.

by ev on Sep 18, 2011 2:48 PM PDT up reply actions

Utah will crush the Bruins

and, this is the best WSU squad in years. Oregon St notoriously looks bad early, then starts kicking ass to finish 3rd in conference. I honestly think UCLA only wins 4 games this season.

I love to see UCLA lose

I probably watch more UCLA games than most UCLA fans. I take seriously the old canard “my two favorite teams are USC and who’s ever playing UCLA.” I think that we all should appreciate what we have in CRN. He’s a nobody, a non entity. He can work his smarmy charm, but he flat out cannot coach — I mean he is worse than PC’s not to be named predecessor. I actually liked Dorrell, I’m being serious here, he seemed like a nice guy and he cared about his players. He actually wasn’t the worst coach (I’d say average Pac X skills). He had the misfortune to recruit against, and be compared to, one of the top 5 all time coaches in PC.
Back to CRN. He is awful. He will never improve. Eventually he will be fired. USC is hampered by sanctions and, lets face it, CLK is no PC. There is no one in the College game even close to PC. USC needs a weak UCLA. So I for one am now rooting for the Bruins and their “special” coach. I want them to beat OSU. I’ll cheer for them against the Arizonas. Lets see them run roughshod (by that I mean beating them by 1 point on a last minute field goal by the punter) over the new guys Colorado and Utah. I hope that when USC plays UCLA Ricks job is secure. An then Lane f’n Kiffin drops 60 on them. I want Rick to succeed, because his job guarantees Trojan dominance.

by ilium55 on Sep 18, 2011 3:20 PM PDT reply actions

It's sad really...

The evidence behind Neuheisel was there the entire time. The poor record after his predecessors recruits were gone. The absolutely horrid job he did with the Baltimore Ravens as their Offensive Coordinator. The list goes on and on. Slick Rick is an excellent salesman, as a coach he’s a complete mirage. I would love to see my Bruins become relevant again, it’s just unfortunate that fans like that have such a warped sense of reality and submit to hive thinking.

by DannyJay01 on Sep 18, 2011 5:20 PM PDT reply actions

Speaking as a USC fan

you are completely right. I always figured that at best Rick could get you guys to, maybe, an 8-5 season before the wheels came off. That’s why I was so excited when he was hired — it was clear that he would never make UCLA good — he was a known commodity.

by ilium55 on Sep 18, 2011 5:31 PM PDT up reply actions

The problem with some fans...

Is that inferiority complex. Their obsession is with USC and not with actually having a respectable program that competes for NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS not just beating SC. As much as sites like DumpDorrell and BN will never admit it, they wanted a coach that was comparable to Pete Carroll. An energetic, charismatic coach who would fire up the fan base. Unfortunately they got exactly what they wanted…Minus the whole winning (and cheating :D) thing.

by DannyJay01 on Sep 18, 2011 5:41 PM PDT up reply actions

If UCLA wanted to win, and beat USC

on a regular basis they would hire Mike Leach or Jim Tressel. Both are proven winners. Both might take the job because of recent scandals. Don’t forget that USC in 2000 was not much better than UCLA is in 2011, a real coach could turn things around. UCLA will never hire either of those candidates because:

1. The fanbase and admin feel they are “to good” for coaches like these who are tainted by scandal

and

2. They would want to make the going rate for good talent — 2.5 mil or so. Not in the budget.

by ilium55 on Sep 18, 2011 5:51 PM PDT up reply actions

Sadly you're right...

The names will be mentioned but for one reason or another they will be discarded, and we will be left with another Alumni who comes on the cheap that they’ll try to mold into another Ben Howland.

You don't need a big name. And you especially don't need "someone that bleeds blue and gold." Period!

Steal a top FCS coach that has FBS dreams and ability. How about a guy like Delaware’s K.C. Keeler, or Eastern Washington’s Beau Baldwin? Ucla needs someone young that can work within a limited budget and with 7/8 scale talent. Unfortunately, the idiots in your fanbase would come at Dan Guerrero with guns blazing. There’s a half dozen guys working FCS that would fit the bill perfectly. Unfortunately it’s Uclol.

by ev on Sep 18, 2011 7:27 PM PDT up reply actions

We noted as much when he was hired...

I remember reading numerous comments rationalizing the hire when the evidence was there staring them in the face.

Some on BN tried to use the logic of past history when looking at Tim Floyd’s record when he was hired…but they wouldn’t do it with RN.

Then they lawyers got involved trying rationalize Neu’s lawsuit.

That was when I knew they were grasping at straws to find a reason, any reason, that could justify the hire in trying to match the energy that PC brought to L.A.

I get it…supporting your coach when you have been irrelevant for a stretch, but the evidence was there and MANY pointed it out.

Many Bruins fans just didn’t want to see it.

The more hilarious aspect in all of this is that many on BN actually think their screaming and yelling might actually force change…right.

I don’t ever want that notoriety…

There's a difference

Between wanting to enact change for the positive and trying to force through your own personal agenda. It seems as though those on BN are so jaded for whatever reason that they hold vendettas against certain individuals and will do everything they can to accentuate their negatives and severely downplay their positives. Or vice versa when it comes to someone they like. Look no further than their headlines to see what I’m talking about. Some of it is pretty humorous but others are just downright sad.

I have to say, I feel sorry for Rick Neuheisel. He’s getting betrayed by his players, and as surprised as I am to say it, he deserves better.

The most telling moment came when he finally broke his facade during a practice and asked his exasperated rhetorical question about whether he’s the only one who cares.

Yup, he does. And despite my loathing of Uclol fans, I respect the fact that Neuheisel cares as much as he does. The guy absolutely deserves better from his team.

But his players obviously don’t care. They seem to play as if they believe they should win by divine right and without effort. They play like a pack of guys who believe all their own hype and mythology, without actually earning any of it. And they seem completely befuddled at the fact that any team would dare even try, instead of just laying down for them.

Watching that game against Texas was painful. I mean, I honestly felt legitimate empathy for Rick, and almost wanted to take a drive to Pasadena just to give him a hug. Probably the only guy in California who wanted to do that, and a Cal guy at that! It was just agonizing to watch him twist in the wind, betrayed by his players, who were out there just not giving a damn. Oh sure, I loved the fact that those incredibly obnoxious and spoiled Uclol fans were getting destroyed, but I really do feel bad for Rick.

In the end, he is already dead. But the problem with Uclol goes way way deeper than Rick Neuheisel, Dan Guerrero, Gene Block, or any other scapegoats those Uclol guys want to trot out. The problem is this toxic culture of theirs built around this hollow mythology that they deserve success by providence and those stupid “four letters” they somehow think convey divine protection. A little dose of humility among bruin fans would go a long way to beginning to solve their woes. But there is no way that will happen. Bruin fans have no humility. Their arrogance and hubris is born of a runaway inferiority complex that forces them to believe the myth that Ucla is better than it is, in ever way: academically, athletically, socially, and otherwise. BN is the perfect example of that.

Sorry, Rick. Really, man.

A lot of that falls on the coach...

It’s his job to get the players to buy in to what he’s trying to sell them. The one thing about Pete Carroll was that before his final year, his players were willing to run through a wall for him if he told them to.

The problem with Rick isn’t just in motivation. It also lies in game planning, adjusting during games, playing the right players, etc. A prime example is the QB situation. Kevin Prince for as gutsy as he is had no business in the starting slot. Even after his first 2 throws you could tell he wasn’t right. Rick waited until 3 interceptions had been thrown and we were down 21 in the first quarter to switch to a QB who led us to one victory and tantalizingly close to a victory over Houston.

by DannyJay01 on Sep 18, 2011 6:43 PM PDT up reply actions

Exactly, this falls on Rick

He was known for building a soft program, to do so at UCLA was just a given. There are plenty of tough players at UCLA, and and talent, more than enough to have a much better record than now.

by ev on Sep 18, 2011 7:37 PM PDT up reply actions

Inferiority and hubris

You didn’t want to go there but… Ucla’s inferiority starts and ends with their permanent and irrevocable status as the Southern Branch. The Bruins have touted athletics in order to be better than Cal, at something, anything. To make matters worse, it’s USC now leads them in the USNews poll. Not that it really matters, but they banged us upside the head with that stupid poll for >20 years. And now? Oh, it’s just a silly ploy to sell magazines and USC is gaming it, look at the international rankings!

It made me chuckle when some bruins were even willing to expunge the record of USC – Cal in order to proclaim themselves USC’s “greatest rival.” You said it Oski, Uclol.

It's all about people, the students and alumni.

On one hand, Ucla departments have brought in huge corporate gifts because of the geographic advantages of being in filthy rich West Los Angeles. Not surprisingly, the largest recipient has been the medical center.

On the other hand, their students and alumni are generally AWOL. Yes, they whine a whole lot, but that’s all they do. Ask them to show some real support and all you hear is crickets. Not even the renovation of “The Cathedral of College Hoops” generates enough excitement among these aloof commuters to generate a signature contribution to the “Campaign of Champions.”

I read on one of the bruin boards

UCLA has the second lowest alumni donation level in the Pac10 (before the addition of Utah and CU of course). If that is even close to true, that backs up everything we have been saying for a long time. You are a bruin for four years, a Trojan for life.

by ev on Sep 19, 2011 7:58 AM PDT up reply actions

I broke my general rule of not reading Bruins Nation and skimmed a couple of comments post game… one member was commenting that since graduating he’s received a few calls from UCLA asking for money and that’s about it. He has a graduate degree from SC and gets the full magazine / events notice / alumni group type interactions as well as the begging letters.

I’ve said as much on Twitter, but if the UC schools are going to survive the massive defunding that’s already started, they’d better start taking notes from private schools about how to raise money. It might not be within the spirit in which the system was started, it might rankle, but they’re in terrible trouble otherwise.

low giving rate,

That low donation stat is amazing for ucla is amazing. I guess they don’t put there $$$ where there big mouths are.

My experience as an alum has not been exactly the same as member of BN. Yes I have always gotten the Trojan Family Magazine and notices of events even back when it was all paper in the mail! I have however never been harangued for donations. I starting giving of my own accord when I was able — and only received thank you notes from SC and a couple of times phone call ‘thank you’ messages by students and they never asked for a donation. Only from support groups do the yearly ‘dues letter’ but I had signed-up for that.

Friends who went MIchigan State, ucla & particularly law school at Berkeley talk about getting ‘donation request’ calls and letters. I get them regularly from Pepperdine because of grad school there. I think it part of our society that we get request and part of the nature of the beast for non-profits including higher education. Heck, all parents know that you are hit up for donations and support at all levels.

While they’re not close to USC’s sophistication, I can tell you that Cal has it going the right way. They’re already sending the “weekly email” and they’re off the charts with all the stuff they do for parents during CalDay, Move In and Parents Weekend. They’ve got a really sharp and personable development person in Ms. Rowena Montoya and we’re already signed off to make phone calls. It’s no wonder they were able to save their non-revenue teams and retain all but a few of the professors they’re famous for, while providing decent quality services for their students. No, you don’t get the White Glove service we Trojans know and love, but they’re not bad! Congrats to the Bear alumni, they’ve got it going.

Ucla has Mushroom and the BN gang. Good luck with those cheap ass losers. The upshot: UCLA SUCKS!

Not all UC’s are as relaxed about soliciting donations as Ucla may be. I know I get deluged with phone calls, letters, emails, and the like from several different UC Berkeley groups – everything from general scholarship funds, to the athletic department, to specialized departmental fundraising.

I give. Perhaps not as much as they want, but I give.

Oh, and I get that slick California magazine, too. And as alumni association publications go, it actually very good. Much more than what some alum from the class of ’93 is up to.

Frankly, I don't feel sorry or Neuheisel or believe he is being betrayed by his players...
I have to say, I feel sorry for Rick Neuheisel. He’s getting betrayed by his players, and as surprised as I am to say it, he deserves better.

On a personal level, I could (and do, to some extent) emphasize with his situation…as I would emphathize with anyone, from any walk of life, who who had passionate ambition, but lacked the ability to achieve it. But on a personal level, I don’t even know the Weasel. Don’t know any of the other 119 D1 coaches, either. I assume that most of them (Weasel included) are good people. Only a few will achieve a lasting success at any given stop, but almost all of them will experience ocasional successes and will revel in the struggle to succeed. It’s a life that is both blessed and cursed. In Weasel’s case, it’s a life that is relatively well paid.

But it’s not personal between me and Weasel. He is the HC of my rival. Nothing more, nothing less. If he succeeds and conducts himself well, then he will earn my respect. If not, he won’t. If he fails, I will enjoy watching it. Sorry…no sympathy. Face it, this guy desparately wants to beat my team every time they play. If he succeeds, it will be a high-point of his carreer. I wouldn’t expect him to feel any other way. If it happens, he won’t be feeling sorry for Trojan Nation, either.

Finally, I don’t beleive that he is the only one at UCLA who cares. I suspect that vast majority of the players on the sideline care…deeply. The ambivilance that they portray is more a factor of not feeling ownership of the product on the field, much more so than not caring. And if the players don’t feel ownership, then that’s squarely on the Weasel. They no longer believe in what he is selling. And like they say: You can’t fire the entire team….
