LOS ANGELES, CA - MARCH 10: Jio Fontan #2 of the USC Trojans looks to move the ball against Brandon Smith #12 of the California Golden Bears in the second half in the quarterfinals of the 2011 Pacific Life Pac-10 Men's Basketball Tournament at Staples Center on March 10, 2011 in Los Angeles, California. I know this is a little late (DJ put it up in the FanShots) but this is horrible news for this kid.
USC's inexperienced basketball team suffered a severe setback Thursday when guard Jio Fontan, one of the Trojans' two returning starters, was diagnosed with a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee.
Fontan, USC's floor leader and top returning scorer, will require surgery and miss the 2011-12 season, Coach Kevin O'Neill said in by telephone from Brazil.
Fontan, a 6-foot senior from Paterson, N.J., was injured Tuesday night during an exhibition in Sao Paulo when he landed awkwardly after being hit in the air. The Trojans are playing a series of scrimmages and exhibitions in Brazil, and are scheduled to play their final game of trip Friday.
Damn Shame for this kid.
Sucks even more because he is originally from where I am at and the locals have high hopes here.
Hoops just can't catch a break.
