NCAA says "Tressell not honest"
Bumped
From the world wide leader:
COLUMBUS, Ohio -- In a sharply worded rebuke of Ohio State's Jim Tressel, the NCAA on Monday accused the 10-year coach with withholding information and lying to keep Buckeyes players on the field who had accepted improper benefits from the owner of a tattoo parlor.
In a "notice of allegations" sent to the school, the NCAA said Monday that the violations relating to the coach are considered "potential major violations."
The thing is, didn't the NCAA already know about some of this? I mean its not like some of this didn't come out before the Sugar Bowl, yet they allowed them to play that game! I know, I know, trying to apply logic to the NCAA is silly and they work on their own time line etc.
I have to think that this could potentially spell the end of Tressell at OSU. There is no way in my mind that the NCAA simply accepts the penalties OSU has already levied. They'll want to stamp their own brand of justice on this, and as well all know it won't be pretty.

The part that blows my mind?
No charge of lack of institutional control. That’s beyond laughable.
"When the seagulls follow the trawler, it's because they think sardines will be thrown into the sea"
OSU fans are saying that because they self reported a lot
and have been complicit with the university (ie they claim they’re being the exact opposite of USC) that is what helped prevent the LoIC deal.
To improve, they should try to become the musical southern cal of the west. - bRuins Nation poster on the Stanford band.
I hear Gene Smith has pictures of Mark Emmert with a naked Cub Scout on his lap. Maybe the institutional control issue is to come in a later report.

Everything I'm hearing is
That LOIC and Failure to Monitor are still on the table, depending on the investigation.
When I try to wrap my head around this, you have to ask yourself what the big difference is.
USC- Two athletes getting money from agents. USC allowed Guillory access to the program. USC allowed Bush to work as an intern at Orensteins, and didn’t follow up on Reggie’s $17,000 1996 Chevy.
Ohio State- 5 Players selling gear for tattoos and cash. Still on probation for 2006 basketball scandal. Coach knows about it before the season, plays 5 ineligible athletes all season long and then lies about having any knowledge of the infraction.
Ohio State has a lying coach and overzealous boosters.
USC has agents throwing money at players and a lax compliance department, and a loose AD.
USC gets the book thrown at it…. why?? Because of how much money Reggie received. Thats all I can think of to explain it. Reggie got enough cash that in their minds USC should have known.
McNair probably did know, but there still is absolutely no hard evidence that he did.
The AD did it!
We got nailed because Garrett was uncooperative. Remember that “nothing but a lot of envy” comment he made? Violation of NCAA rule 13-69…..Contempt of Cop!

Exactly
Mike Garrett really didn’t help our cause.

Two words...Jim Delaney
Arguably the most powerful man in CFB as B10 Commish, at least tied w/ Mike Slive.
I hope that you are right, Frak. But, I was not aware that the NCAA could add charges after sending the Notice of Allegations?!?
As others have said, OSU AD Gene Smith has worked on NCAA committees and has strong ties there. Mike Garrett did nothing but thumb his nose at the NCAA, and they made the Trojans an example of how they deal with non-conformists….bow down and kiss the ring.
A Quick Note for the Quitters

Its a waste of time to compare
…the USC case with any other case. The NCAA is a corrupt organization that places the agenda of its power core above administering justice and integrity to its members. The USC case was unique…in that no other program had ever received just disproportionately severe sanctions before, and will ever receive such disproportionately severe sanctions in the future…unless the school in question is a specific target for abuse, as was USC. The COI acted with malice against USC…because they could.
Looking at the tOSU case, it seems ‘fair’ that tOSU would vacate those games in which ineligible players competed, and perhaps receive a one-year bowl ban. Tressel should (and probably will) be releived of his duties, but I don’t have a problem with letting this play out until that becomes inevitable. If tOSU (aside from Tressel) was culpable, they should probably get some nominal scholarship reductions. Since tOSU has already admitted that they didn’t properly educate their highest profile players in basic NCAA regs, this should be easy to justify.
I don’t see that tOSU deserves any punishment beyond that stated above. In fact, if USC had gotten penalties comparable to what tOSU is bound to get, I’d consider that USC had been dealt with harshly. I’m angry that USC was so badly abused by the COI, but I’m not going to get angry every future time a school gets the type of penalties that USC should have gotten. After all, its not tOSU’s fault they are not USC to the eyes of the COI.
There's talk going round.............
that the Vest is falling on his sword for the School & higher ups.
Oh, Mama, can this really be the end
To be stuck inside of Mobile
With the Memphis blues again
-R. Zimmerman
Gnossos, I've read that, too.
Even Buckeyes are speculating that this goes above Tressel. But no credible media source has reported anything about the ‘higher ups’. In the end, we will probably never know. All that will matter is what the NCAA determines…and I’d be suprised if any higher ups are implicated, especially with Gene Smith being a card-carrying member of NCAA’s gold ’ol boy club.
In the USC case there were a lot of message board opinions that “Carroll had to know” and “USC didn’t cooperate with the NCAA”. But in the final NCAA PIR, the NCAA determined that only McNair provided misleading information, and the NCAA determined that USC cooperated with the investigation. USC’s penalites SHOULD have been based on these conclusions. I’d expect the same for tOSU, minus the COI abuse of power element that USC received.
It's pretty bad when the Ncaa calls a someone Dishonest since they are the biggest Liars in the world.
BOOM_BOOM that was the sound of the DUCKs being shot down again in a BCS Bowl Game---I guess all that Slave Money can't buy a championship.
oH and Flush the sound Our Basketball Program is going down the drain, anybody got some liquid Plumber.
