Matt Barkley and the 2012 season's expectations

Lets not get ahead of ourselves.

There is a lot of talk about USC going all the way next year.

Matt Barkley returning for his senior year is a very important part of the equation. Without him, next season would not be looking as bright.

But lets come back to that later.

There is no question that Matt Barkley is going to be the most watched player next season.

What's not to like?

He is a good looking kid from Newport Beach who comes from a great family, has a million dollar smile, is respectful and mature beyond his twenty-one years and doesn't have an ounce of baggage.

Barkley is this decades version of Jack Armstrong, the All-American boy.

Everyone is going to want a piece of him...good and bad. The good is obvious, Barkley will be next seasons feel good story. The bad is that there will be some who think Barkley is too good...you know the typical contrarians. Opposing players will be lining up to take their shots on the field and Barkley's detractors off the field will have an extra edge about them.

Regardless, I can think of no other player that will be able to handle the spotlight better than Matt Barkley.

The comparisons are starting to be made...

USC quarterback Matt Barkley is being celebrated with an almost religious zeal after announcing Thursday that he would remain a Trojan for another season, forgoing an opportunity to be drafted in the first round of the NFL and receive a multimillion dollar payday.

Forget Ferris Bueller, hail Barkley!

Barkley could even possibly bring USC a Heisman Trophy and a national championship next year while leading the team out of its dark, bowl-ban days. In his speech at Heritage Hall, The Times' Bill Plaschke noted that his words sounded like Tebow's when the former Florida quarterback gave his famous "Promise Speech" that led the Gators to the 2008 national title.

Matt Barkley is not going to like that. He really does want to be under the radar.

Star-divide

He is already the 2012 pre-season Heisman favorite.

USC quarterback Matt Barkley’s decision to forgo entry into next spring’s draft and return to school for his senior season makes him the clear early front runner for the 2012 Heisman.

Why Barkley? Well, consider that most of the players who finished in the top 10 in this year’s Heisman race are probably headed to the NFL, leaving what looks like a weak field in place for next year.

Barkley, who finished sixth in the race after throwing for 3,528 yards and 39 touchdowns this season, will start his campaign head and shoulders above the other contenders thanks to his status as the star quarterback on a traditional power contending for the national title.

When you also take into account the offensive weapons at Barkley’s disposal, including one of the best receiving duos in college football history in Robert Woods and Marqise Lee, you have to expect him to put up Heisman-worthy numbers as a senior.

Like I said, expectations are already riding high.

And it doesn't stop there...

You could argue he's the best all-time USC quarterback already. If it's still an argument in 12 months, maybe Thursday was a mistake. Kiffin was on the sideline as a USC assistant for the end of Palmer's career and the entirety of Leinart's. He doesn't throw around the term "greatest Trojan ever" loosely.

"If he was to have a great year this year, how could you not say he was because of all the outside stuff he went through?" Kiffin said. "None of those guys had guys being able to transfer. None of those guys had to motivate a team around them without a bowl game to go to for two years."

If I said it once, I said it a thousand times this past season Barkley's production will depend on the protection he will get from his offensive line, next season it is going to depend a lot on who is protecting him at left tackle.

Now, about next seasons expectations.

There are lots of changes in the Pac-12 South Division alone. Three new coaches will offer different looks on both sides of the ball. And Oregon will be looking for revenge for this years Duck hunt in Eugene.

USC's defense still has some issues...

I don’t want to minimize what the return of Barkley means to the Trojans. He’s an elite quarterback with what will likely be the two best receivers in college football (Marqise Lee, Robert Woods) and a 1,000-yard tailback (Curtis McNeal) around him. USC will score on anyone, and coach Lane Kiffin will further his reputation as one of the game’s best offensive minds.

But until Lane’s father Monte gets the defense to start playing like his vaunted Tampa Bay Buccaneers defenses, Southern Cal is a 10- or 11-win team playing in a BCS bowl game next fall. There’s nothing wrong with that—but it’s also not close to dreams of yesterday for most USC fans.

[...]

Look at USC’s two biggest games this past season: The Trojans gave up 91 points and 990 yards to Stanford and Oregon and split the games. You’re not winning championships with those defensive numbers.

USC also got off to a slow start last season, the defense also got tired in some of those games. They had to hold on to the very end against Oregon and that last TD that Stanford scored was aginst a freshman CB because the starter went out because of an injury.

Depth will still be an issue.

So, with all the attention being placed on USC starting now, once again opposing teams will view playing USC as their super bowl and the face of that attention is Matt Barkley.

There is no better person to be at the helm when the season starts at the Meadowlands next September...

I really feel the Defense is coming around and will be dominate next year

Now about the other teams I conference:
Oregon then # one team to deal with they will be tough and yes they will want revenge, but I feel that Bark and the boys want them in LA for payback.
Stanford no luck means about half the points put up
Washington nothing to make me rollover about
ASU could be strong on defense but then again BSU put up 50+
Utah will be the best of the rest with the addition of Kevin York and they were playing pretty good down the stretch
Arizona should be improved but who knows
WSU was better last year and with leach could be a surprise
Cal will always be in the bowl mix
OSU I can’t say much about them other than Helter Skelter, their coach must have been a hippie.
Colorado maybe a couple more years to bowl status

Yes we can't play in a Bowl and that is lucky for the rest of College FB' but next year we at USC will dominate.

I think next year looks great.

I think our outlook is as good as it was for most of the PC years. Hayes is as much of a tool as he ever was. Yes the stats from a Stanford don’t look good, that was a triple overtime game and Oregon is Oregon.

What has me excited is how much improvement the team showed last year. The OL was a shambles at the start of the year but had really come around by the end. And we only lose one player, a great one, but only one.from that unit.

Having all the defensive backs and linebackers returning is huge as well. And there were three freshman starting at the end of the year, not because the starters like Chris Galippo were hurt, but because the youngsters beat them out. We lose two key players from the DL but that’s really not bad in the big picture.

USC may not win the title next year, but the team should be in contention.

The biggest thing the Trojans have to bear in mind,

is that they can’t let the attention go to their heads. Let’s face it… the last two years, SC has been in the doghouse as far as the BCS and much of the media were concerned. Although I won’t argue with the AP #5 ranking at all. Especially since we’re above the Mallards. But next season is going to be different. All eyes on SC, again. Media hype will be past a fever pitch. Hell, it already is. Good thing Matt’s mature enough to simply shrug it off and keep things in focus. Let’s hope the rest of team takes a big cue and follows him.

I’ve been surfing numerous sports sites, reading all sorts of reactions. The biggest negative comments are coming from domers(of course). Do they ever get lives in South Bend? For the most part, however, I’ve seen a lot of positive comments from people that are really excited just to see Matt play. Many of whom weren’t even Trojan fans. Barkley transcends a lot of barriers because his personality allows it. People are drawn to someone like that. Which is why he’s the best man to lead the team into something really, really special next season.

Agree with thrust of the comments.... but a little scheduling correction...

I think the season starts at home against Hawai’i on Sept 1st then next week is with Syracuse at Meadowlands. And we don’t play WSU or Oregon State again until 2013 unless they, Scotty and company don’t follow their own ‘procedures’.

Kiffin and Barkley are punctuating a new era of amateur football at USC, complete with sportsmanship, ethics, and heart

While Kiffin was overjoyed at Barkley’s decision, you can’t mark it all to selfish interest—just look at the way he supported Matt Kalil’s decision to forego his senior year for the NFL.
Looks like the Trojans made an inspired choice when they hired Kiffin. Not only did the Trojans earn a #5 AP ranking, they have largely avoided the taunting, personal fouls, and unsportsmanlike conduct penalties that marred the otherwise successful years under Pete Carroll.
Kiffin’s leadership is an example of why it’s a pleasure to transfer allegiance from pro football to college ball. There are many other coaches who teach ethics and sportsmanship, foremost among them my favorites, Chip Kelly at Oregon, Brian Kelly at Notre Dame, and Les Miles at LSU.

i think Kiffin can coach and he was the perfect coach for usc at the time. ESPECIALLY, taking him away from an s.e.c. team. loved it!

Breaking it down Dallas style

1) I don’t think Matty Trojan wants to be “under the radar”. Methinks he wants to spread the gospel from a major platform.

2) the Heisman is all about hype and popularity. But, why should Matty be the Heisman fave if RG3, the Heisman winner, returns to defend? RG3 is very much 50/50 on returning, from what I hear.

3) MB3 is not the best USC QB ever. Rather, Lane Kiffin is the set USC offensive coach ever. Look at the vols and Raiders stats under Kiffin.

Fk, accidentally posted due to IPad error, cont.....

3) look at what Lane did for Eric Crompton at Tenn. Barkley will have the best QB stats ever, but much credit is due to Lane Kiffin, who is a g’damn offensive genius.

USC was going to be good next season regardless. And, Matty Trojan and his teammates have a lot of work ahead of themselves to even come close to reaching our potential. I still think Palmer, Leinart, and Sanchez were better QBs than Matt on the field, and Lane deserves more credit. But, without a doubt Matty Trojan might be the best representative of a USC football student-athlete ever. We couldn’t ask for a better kid to lead the program. Let’s just pump the brakes because they haven’t really accomplished anything yet.

Regarding (2)

I don’t think RG3’s stats alone get him the Heisman without the Oklahoma finish. I don’t think that’s right, as I think he was the most deserving either way, but I also think that’s the way it is. I think it’ll be difficult for him to repeat even if he returns, just because a small school player has to have all the pieces fall the right way to peak at the right time to get the votes of the less attentive voters.

Stanford is done

not rivalry talk, and they play us tough in our best years. But DeCastro and Martin are projected high-first-round, they’re gone along with Luck and targets Fleener, Whalen, Owusu, and Gatewood. Look for them to run the ball and Shaw to take a step back in the coach-of-the-year race. On the defensive side, Howel and Michael Thomas graduate.

If Oregon loses James it’ll hurt no matter what the writers said when he was hurt. They lose Paulson and Tuinei and a couple of stud defenders. They should definitely stay ahead of Stanford, though.

Besides Barkley, SC has 7 first- or second-team All-Pac-12 coming back with Khaled Holmes and Wes Horton on the lines. Oregon and Stanford might have 4. We should certainly have the talent to be favored in every Pac-12 game we play.

That said, any game could be an upset – but that’s what it would be – an upset.

by LA_lover on Dec 23, 2011 9:39 PM PST reply actions

check the oregon offensive stats during the games without james....

oregon also has barner, trey and all y’all’s favorite DAT. We have a 4/5 star RB commit who is ready today and another 5 star RB with us in his top 4 (not a big deal i know, just saying). my point is that your focus on RB’s is unfortunate because the Ducks, really, are loaded there.

your concern should be with oregon’s passing game next year. we’ll have a senior qb who has already blown up auburn through the air in a NC game, but more importantly, oregon redshirted three 4/5 star receivers with speed like no other. Kelly was a passing guru at New Hampshire. He threw it all over the place. next year, oregon looks like it will be ready to implement Kelly’s air raid to the already scary rushing attack. Plus, we return all 3 starting cornerbacks and several safeties with considerable playing experience under their belts now.

it’s going to be a great year of college football in 2012! i can’t wait. welcome back trojans!

I didn't see much improvement from Thomas from last year to now

I’m sure you will be better at receiver next year but truly great skill position players don’t redshirt much these days.

even LMJ redshirted. DAT and Lyerla playing as true frosh is rare with Kelly. I’ve never really heard him explain why he is so pro redshirt.

+1 Rabbit

Darron doesn’t have much upside passing, and if the Ducks had talented frosh WRs, they would have played. LMJ was a step above the avg Duck RB. The Ducks are on a downward trajectory now, to be likely accelerated by the CAA.

Barner's legit

It’ll be interesting to see if he can handle the load of a feature back in the second half of the season. RB by committee is an iffy prospect, even if the cupboards are overflowing. We’ve seen that here.

Good luck in the Rose bowl

I took the ducks on my bowl picks since I have been underwhelmed by Wisconsin a couple of times this year. There is a lot we already know about Oregon but Kiffin did dictate how more the half of the game was played.

But I don’t be surprised if Oregon’s defense spends a lot of time on the field with Montee Ball moving chains and time running out for the ducks. I think Trojan fans know what I mean here.

by Flayfluflah on Dec 26, 2011 7:05 AM PST up reply actions

They will not be able to handle the size of the Wisconsin OL

They are bigger than ours and are really good at their blocking schemes, which they will use 7-9 mins on ave.

Barner did a good job against us. Didn’t see your Nevada and Missouri State games, so I can’t say much about Tra Carson, didn’t notice him or DAT running against SC.
