NCAA gets out the comfy pillow: the Ohio State penalties

The NCAA handed out their sanctions to Ohio State today. The summary version:

  • Nine scholarship reduction over 3 years
  • One year bowl ban
  • Five year show-cause penalty for Jim Tressel.
The show-cause is fairly stern, but the rest of it just goes to show that the NCAA is right: they don't adhere to any sort of consistent standards when applying penalties. Whether or not you think that's a good thing is rather likely to depend on your particular school affiliation.

Gene Smith apparently thinks these penalties are harsh. Boo hoo, Mr Smith, boo hoo.

You can find SBN's ongoing coverage here.

The penalties seem appropriate.

If SC is the template, why isn't the NCAA torching the Horseshoe?

I bet Gene Smith wishes he'd spent more on lunches for his old pals at the NCAA (sucker!)

I would assume they would be given the go ahead to leave and not be required to sit out a year.

I would also imagine that we look like a fairly nice destination for those players. I’m just not sure if any of their seniors fill any of the holes we may have this year.

@Logan Couture: Heard Charlie Sheen had an interview I missed tonight, damn! He might be the only person in the world thats #winning more than us right now.

It doesn’t look like this was included in the sanctions….maybe that was seen as too severe considering osu only had multiple players taking benefits from boosters, etc. so they would come and stay in school….it’s not like they had one player taking things from people pushing him to the nfl, which is clearly a bigger deal.

I hope you are right…. thought it was something they invented for usc.

Not sure

when the bowl ban was handed down to USC, it was the JRs who left not the SRs. OSU is only getting a one year ban, only their SRs would be eligible. Can’t see many of them leaving just for a chance at a bowl, not when they are that close to graduating.

As far as your poll goes, both of the first two?

For what was actually done, the penalties are reasonable… except when compared to what you guys got.

Surprised they did anything else to OSU

Even so, it was still a slap on the wrist.

In other news, the NCAA is so upset with tOSU, the COI will be adding another year of scholarship reductions to USC.

It would have been worse if the main offender testified to the NCAA

Thats a big difference…Lake wanted to hurt Reggie and USC the tOSU guy was going down with the ship.

Just like in the SEC.

Lake and Michaels wanted to be big shots, sit at the big boys table.

The tOSU guy wanted COMPLETE anonymity…different culture outside of the ritz and and glitz (Los Angeles and Miami)

You know what. . . . .?

Fuck. It!

In a weird, twisted way- you gotta love how Smith and Gee greased the NCAA’s chain and worked their asses off to limit the scope and frame the perspective in the allegations against them. What’s difficult to swallow is the dereliction of duty and diligence in determining actual allegations against tOSU. The people that worked for them (head coach and compliance), their student-athletes, alumni and boosters flaunted NCAA rules and bylaws to the point of comedy and yet- THIS! These sanctions aren’t entirely surprising, it’s the shamelessness of the NCAA and tOSU’s AD that stupefies me.

Infuckingcredible!
