As disheartened as I am with this hire...

I’m wondering why no one has at least taken the time to look at Mora’s offensive, or defensive philosophies. I get it, he coached the Falcons to within one game of the Super Bowl, and then some sub par seasons before spending a terrible season with Seattle, but no one has ever actually looked at the way he’s game planned, and seen if maybe it would fit at the college level.

All I’ve read or heard from BN is “Chianti Dan”, “#nomora”, and so on, but no substance. The national media seems to hang on to his record, but nothing more. Of course in order for me to actually have faith in this hire, I’d have to believe that Dan Guerrero actually completed a thorough and well thought out process, but that would probably be asking too much.

Anyhow, does anyone actually have any information on what kind of systems Mora runs, or has run in the past? I know he coached Michael Vick for a good minute, so would there be any way to incorporate Brett Hundley into that?

Exact same thing with Kiffin hiring

Just widespread criticism focused on his record. Once you dug into the stats and schemes, Kiffin showed great success and improvement.

I would totally recommend doing your own research and not buying the record criticism at face value.

Exactly

I wish I had that kind of time, but I really think it would be worth looking into, rather than looking at someone’s record, which was attained on a completely different level of the game.

Rational Bruins are at a premium (or maybe it's a Texas thing)

Like DFW says, Kiffin had his doubters in the media and haters in SEC country (and BN), but we knew there was a lot more to him than his W – L record.

Mora is an upgrade. Expect respectability by 2013.

I don't think learning on the job is a bad thing (or even avoidable)

The biggest knock against Mora is his lack of familiarity with the college game. While Mora does have a lot to learn from the Xs and Os standpoint, this can be minimized if he hires the right staff.

Even Kiffin supporters will admit that he is learning how to be a HC on the job and that he still has a significant way to go. He’s winning games (which makes most fans happy) and he’s growing as a HC (which makes the fans who look deeper happy). Ditto with Monte Kiffin and college defense. Pete Carroll’s greatest attribute as a college coach, I believe, was as a motivator. And he has freely admitted that he made mistakes and had to learn how to reach college kids after his years in the NFL. The genious of Carroll is that it only took him 6 games and a bad loss at ND to figure it out.

The people who say that NFL coaches rarely succeed in college football will cite examples like Weis and Callahan. But when you look at their personalities, its not hard to figure out why they can’t relate to college kids. While Mora is an unknown in this regard, he’s no Fat Charlie. No doubt, Mora will have to learn how to recruit and motivate college players. He’ll succeed or he won’t, but his energy and charisma should serve him well

The problem with looking at Mora’s numbers and record is that these types of things can often be read both ways. Right now, Mora is a big unkown. If I were you, I’d sit back and enjoy the show rather than try to figure it all out.

His system in Seattle was compelete dog shit

I think offensively he runs the WCO and kept trying to force Vick into it even though his talents clearly weren’t suited for it.

His personnel decisions are terrible, he doesn’t get along with the media, he refuses to take blame for things that go wrong.

His history and situation aren’t comparable to Kiffin’s at all.

It is funny how we at CC know that uclol is living in the past but all the writers have just picked up on it.

Yes we can't play in a Bowl and that is lucky for the rest of College FB' but next year we at USC will dominate.

This is the first time in some time that I've been scanning Bruins Nation

And even they’ve been saying much the same thing. They don’t like Carroll, but they at least acknowledge the results, even while repeating the usual inaccuracies about cheating.

ucla's Mora hiring will probably have the usual dead cat bounce

where everything he does will seem like a move in the right direction but ultimately the bruins will not make up any ground.

As far as anything thing analogous to Pete Carroll arrival; that type of accelerated improvement won’t happen because ucla doesn’t have the untapped talent which is ready to be unleashed.

by Flayfluflah on Dec 13, 2011 10:05 AM PST reply actions

No untapped talent?

UCLA has has had top recruiting classes in 3 of the last 4 years. The biggest knock on the previous staff was that they had absolutely no clue on how to utilize it. Talent isn’t the issue, it’s motivation.

by DannyJay01 on Dec 14, 2011 5:48 PM PST up reply actions

ucla doesn't have

a talented quarterback, or offensive line. The WR core has athleticism, but tends to drop the ball a lot. There is some talent on defense if someone with a clue can get it working and organized. ucla will be better next year, but with Prince at QB they aren’t going to make much headway in the offense. Hundley is a question mark right now. I don’t think ucla has any where near the talent that USC, and Oregon do right now. ucla is more on par with Washington, and the Arizona’s at the moment. Mora is going to need a couple years to fix the damage from the Neuheisel era. Neuheisel took great players and turned them into good or fair players, and it takes a year or so for a competent coach to help these kids get their mojo back, and teach them how to play football again.

I agree motivation was a problem with some of the ucla palyers. Carroll seems to be one of those guys who needs an attitude adjustment, Embree too probably. ucla lost its self respect at Tuscon last season, and the team gave up on the coaches. They won some games after that, but it was in spite of Neuheisel, not because of him.

He ran the West Coast Offense

Which was the same offense used by Paul Hackett and Karl Dorrell, and we know how well that usually works in college. Expect a very thick playbook and the offense to be much more complex than it was last season. The first thing Chow did when he took over from Hackett was simplify the offense, and with that came results. I don’t think that there are many WCOs that I know off that have been wildly successful in the college ranks, and ucla’s team is built on a modified spread offense right now. All of these factors lead me to believe that ucla has at least a couple years of recruiting to do to get the type of players that Mora will need to run the offense his way.

Of course he could completely switch directions and hire a spread guy at OC. He is a defensive coach primarily, and if he has the guts to trust the offense to someone else, he might have success at ucla early.

I don’t think that many USC people are questioning Mora as a football mind, but rather just reveling in the chaos that has become ucla’s bi-decade coaching search.

I think Mora will improve ucla football, but one reason for that is that they really can’t get any worse.

by frak on Dec 13, 2011 12:03 PM PST reply actions

A big key is to simplify the schemes

Disaster looms if Mora tries to use NFL schemes on college. Just look at last season how USC struggled with Lane and Monte.

PC was greatly aided by hiring experienced college coordinators. Mora needs to do the same. Don’t bring in a bunch of NFL assistants. Hiring Mazzone from ASU would be a coup and a great start for the Bruins on offense. Will Mora hire a true college DC, or will he run the defense? Big question there.
